The Carson City Convention and Visitors Bureau has decided to shut down the V&T Railway for the season. The final regular run will be Saturday, Nov. 6.
"We had such a great season and were selling out almost every weekend until we got through September," said bureau Director Candy Duncan. "Then things started to slow down."
Duncan said the bureau and operators made the decision in part to be responsible financially.
"We felt like ending the season on a high note and not go into those extra months and have trains with only a dozen people on them," Duncan said.
She said last year they ran trains through December.
"Even though they were great trains, they weren't full," she said. "They ended up costing us money. We want to be responsible and make sure we're getting closer to paying for it."
Duncan said, however, V&T Railroad operator Tom Gray plans to continue running some holiday trains between Virginia City and Gold Hill through Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Gray is also operator for the full V&T run.
Duncan said, however, if a large group or two comes to Carson City and wants to take the train, "we'll try to accommodate them" with a special train run.
The V&T will open next year's season May 29.
In the meantime, Duncan said she is attending a steam train convention in Alamosa, Colo., home of the Rio Grande Scenic Railroad, to get more and better ideas how to market the V&T into a worldwide attraction for western Nevada.
