By his own admission, Carson High quarterback Trey Jensen played his worst game of the season last week against Reno, and the resulting 21-17 loss was his first as a starting quarterback.
Jensen showed his resiliency Friday night against Spanish Springs, completing 14 of 23 passes for 152 yards and a score in the Senators' thrilling 28-21 victory in the quarterfinal round of the 4A regional playoffs.
He completed two straight passes (15 and 11 yards) to Dylan Sawyers on the Senators' game-winning drive which was capped by a 53-yard scoring run by Sawyers.
"Coach (Blair Roman) talked to me a lot this week," Jensen said. "He told me to stay calm and confident. He put it on me all week to do what I needed to do to get the job done.
"I worked on throwing the ball a lot with coach (Kiko) Vega. That's all I worked on. I had an idea we were going to throw. I didn't know how much (until we got going)."
Jensen also made a nice play with his feet, scrambling for 23 yards and a first down at the Spanish Springs' 32-yard line. That set up Sawyers' run on the next play which tied the game at 14 early in the third quarter.
"Trey played fantastic," Roman said. "I'm proud of him. If he had played even an above average game last week we'd be 10-0. He did a good job of throwing the ball."
