DUI checkpoint nets 6 arrests

Six people were arrested and dozens more cited Saturday during a DUI checkpoint in front of Mills Park.

According to Sheriff Ken Furlong, 1,222 vehicles passed through the checkpoint between 4 and 10 p.m. Saturday in the eastbound lanes of Highway 50 East.

"I thought it was very productive," said Furlong. "For the hours that we did it, I was a little surprised that we had so many. It tells me that we need to increase the education and awareness around town. That was more than what was expected."Furlong said 12 vehicles were impounded, 45 citations were issued and six people were arrested on DUI charges, two of which were felonies. Among those arrested were:

• John Nickell, 65, a highway flagger from Carson City, on suspicion of drunken driving. According to the arrest report, a breath test indicated his blood alcohol content at .118.

• John Watts, 39, a tow driver from Reno, on suspicion of drunken driving. According to the arrest report, a breath test indicated his blood alcohol content at .147.

• Nicholas Bailey, 25, a grocery store worker from Carson City, on suspicion of driving under the influence of marijuana, driving without a license and failure to appear on a DUI charge with accident out of Wells.

• Thomas Andersen, 55, a project engineer from Carson City, on suspicion of drunken driving. According to the arrest report, a breath test indicated his blood alcohol content at .119.

• Raymond Lee Carmack, 64, retired of Dayton, on suspicion of driving under the influence of marijuana and felony possession of marijuana. He allegedly had 3.2 grams of marijuana in his vehicle.
