NNDA hosting economic outlook event for 2011

Nevada State Bank Economist Jeff Thredgold will present his 2011 economic outlook at 7 a.m. Tuesday at the Carson Valley Inn.

Thredgold has been seen on CNBC and is often quoted in the financial press.

Cost is $20 with reservations or $35 at the door. Breakfast will be served at 7:30 a.m.

Young professionals to host mixer, donate to BAC

The Carson City Young Business Professionals will hold a mixer at the Brewery Arts Center's Artisan Cafe, 449 W. King St., at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The BAC Stage Kids will perform a song from their new play, "You're a Good Man Charlie Brown."

Cost is $5 and all money will be donated to the BAC.

Builders group to host membership meeting

The Builders Association of Western Nevada holds it general membership meeting at 5 p.m. Tuesday inside the Gold Dust West.

The organization's new directors and officers will be announced at the meeting. Dinner will be served at 6 p.m. and a reception will follow.

Carson business honored with awards

Members of Carson City's Noble Studios recently took home some awards.

Co-owner Jarrod Lopiccolo received an award for "20 under 40" presented by the Young Professionals Network of Nevada.

Noble Studios received an award for In Business Las Vegas 2010 Nevada Entrepreneur Award honorees.

The web development company also recently hired four people.

Local animal clinic passes accreditation

Sierra Veterinary Hospital of Carson City, 1477 N. Saliman Rd., has again received accreditation following an evaluation by the American Animal Hospital Association.

The evaluation includes a review of the hospital's facility, medical equipment, practice methods and pet health care management.

Only 15 percent of all small animal veterinary practices in the U.S. have achieved accreditation by the American Animal Hospital Association. In order to maintain accredited status, Sierra Veterinary Hospital must continue to be evaluated regularly by the association.

Carson beauty supply store calls it quits

Hollywood Beauty Center in the Topsy Lane shopping center, 911 Topsy Ln., closed its doors last week.

The business had been open for six years. An employees said business had fallen by half and the rent was no longer sustainable.

Publication calls Nevada worst state for retirees

Money-rates.com says Nevada is the worst state to retire in because of a high cost of living that's 105 percent the national average, and 14.3 percent unemployment.

According to Richard Barrington, the author of the article, "Nevada has the second lowest tax rate in the country, but scored poorly on just about every other criterion. Gambling enthusiasts may disagree, but high crime rates and a dismal economy make Nevada a bad bet for retirees."

Carson City manufacturer to attend symposium

The Micromanipulator Co., will attend the International Symposium for Testing and Failure Analysis this week.

The company will detail its latest advances in high-temperature probe test systems. The event is in Dallas. Micromanipulator was founded in 1956.

Sparks is getting a Hooters

Baldini's Casino in Sparks will open a Hooters restaurant in February 2011.

The restaurant will take over the casino's buffet space and will be constructed by Tyler-Sparks LLC. The business is expected to employ 50 people.

The restaurant will include an outdoor patio bar and live entertainment with a "Club Hooters," which will feature bands, DJ's, karaoke and comedy nights.
