Congratulations to all the winners and losers in the recent election. The winners are congratulated because they won. The losers are congratulating themselves for not winning, so that they can kick back and see how the winners come through on their promises. Good luck. And thanks to everyone for putting themselves out there, to be kicked and vilified by everyone who doesn't share their exact opinions. It takes a brave soul to run for office.

Two old-time Carson City residents passed away quite recently, Gloria Cogorno and Dr. James Roberts. They were both fine examples of humanity, and will be greatly missed. Our condolences to their families.

Dr. Roberts ran for Congress in 1994, the same time M ran for Lt. Gov. They were catching a plane to Ely to campaign, and, as they got on it, Dr. R realized there was no loo onboard. He quickly told the stewardess that he needed one, so she told the captain, he shut down the plane, and Jim returned to the concourse. When he returned they restarted the plane and they flew to Ely. That story tickled them for many years afterward. M can see it happening these days ... right.

The Leonid meteor showers will be in the sky Wednesday and Thursday, so, if there are no clouds, go out and have a peek. The Western NV Astronomical Society will also meet on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Jack C. Davis Observatory on the WNC campus. Everyone's welcome.

A bit belated happy birthday to the United States Marine Corps, 235 years old last week (Pete Livermore told us; we're certain he was there); and a much more recent one to Bryan Harris, not nearly so old. Happy 56th anniversary to Joyce and Bob Hamlin. Their son, Dave, is Carolyn's new boss (she met him when he was 8 ... does that tell you anything?).

Bruce Smith sent this one off the Internet: "A recent study conducted by DMV and the Dept. of Health indicates that 23 percent of traffic deaths are alcohol related. That means that 77 percent are caused by idiots who just drink coffee, juices, eat and talk or text on cell phones. Therefore, beware of those who don't drink alcohol. They cause twice as many accidents."

Stuff: Poker is not a sport. It's a game, like bridge or Monopoly or Candyland. It does not belong on the sports pages. So there. Paul Schat's is expanding in the Carson Mall. Good for them. Thanks to Paula Richards, Army veteran, for the interesting story on the WASP's in WWII. For anyone going into Reno for a doctor's appointment, or to go shopping, try Mimi's on the corner of South McCarran and Kietzke. Nice people and good food; and they take reservations. Don't forget to get your tickets for the Nutcracker by calling the Pinkerton Dance Studio or Brewery Arts Center. It runs right after Thanksgiving and is always great.

Carolyn went to a lecture the other night, where the lecturer (from Reno) said they would have another one soon, and that if people wanted to stay overnight, they could stay at the Ormsby House. May we suggest you bring your own cot, sleeping bag and picnic.
