Jury finds man guilty of battery

A Carson City jury last week found a man guilty of third-offense domestic battery.

Donald Bigpond, 27, faces up to five years in prison when sentenced on Dec. 21.

Following a day and half of testimony, the jury returned the guilty verdict on Wednesday.

According to court records, Bigpond choked and beat his girlfriend during a domestic dispute Aug. 28

He was previously convicted of second-offense domestic battery on Dec. 11, 2009 and first offense domestic battery on July 31. All three batteries were of the same victim.

Monday in District Court:

• A trial date of Jan. 25 has been set for Frederick Atherton III, 22, and Ralph Allen Keith Jr. 24, on charges of robbery, home invasion and grand larceny of a motor vehicle. They are accused of breaking into an an Airport Road apartment in August and taking a motorcycle from an elderly man as repayment for an alleged debt owed them by the man's grandson.

• William Hammond, 20, flunked out of drug court where his sentence would have been deferrred upon successful completion. Instead, on Monday Hammond was sent to prison for 12 to 36 months on a charge of possession of a controlled substance.

• William Charles Boyd, 28, flunked out of DUI diversion court and was sentenced to 12 to 30 months in prison on felony third-offense drunken driving.
