Ballroom dance class starts Sunday

A 15-week ballroom dance class will begin Sunday at the Genoa Town Hall.

Instructor Larry Ward will be teaching cha-cha, waltz, fox trot, salsa, East Coast swing, Texas two-step and American tango, 7-8:30 p.m. every Sunday through March 6.

The classes will be offered at a reduced rate.

"Most ballroom classes are $10 each hour and paid six to eight weeks in advance," Ward said. "Due to the economy, this class is only $8 paid as attended."

Ward, who has 55 years' dance experience, said it is a fun way to get fit.

"In an hour and a half of dancing you will burn 500 calories and dance three miles," he said.

The courses will give dancers the skills they need to perform in any situation.

"This class is designed so you can go anywhere and be able to social dance," Ward said.

Classes are $8 for adults and $5 for teens.

Holiday Jazz and Poetry Dec. 14 in

The Mile High Jazz Band and vocalist Sheryl Adams will be joined by Rita Geil and other award-winning poets for an evening of big-band jazz and poetry from 8-10 p.m. Dec. 14, at Comma Coffee.

Poets/readers include Rita Geil, Terri Breeden, Krista Lukas, Susan Sara Priest, Tracy McQuay and Lee Warner.

General admission is $5 at the door, and free for age 18 and under. Swing dance instruction from 6-7:15 p.m. is $5 additional.

Planning commission meeting canceled

The Planning Commission meeting scheduled for today has been canceled.

The meeting has been rescheduled for 1 p.m. Dec. 1 in the Community Center's Sierra Room.

Open house for new fitness system

Ascent Physical Therapy is hosting an open house this afternoon to introduce its new fitness training center.

The highlight of the center will be the CoreAlign system, a method of training that improves posture, balance and functional movement patterns in not only physical therapy patients but in exercise enthusiasts as well.

The CoreAlign system stimulates the core stability muscles to fire in an optimal timing pattern while individuals perform challenging exercises, deep stretches and core controlled aerobic training.

The open house will be 4:30-7:30 p.m. at Ascent Physical Therapy, 3246 N. Carson St., with hors d'oeuvres, wine and raffle prizes.

Meeting to address need for foster, adoptive homes

The Department of Child and Family Services will host a community informational workshop from 5:15-6:15 p.m. Thursday at the Carson City Library. Residents of Carson City and surrounding communities are invited to attend.

National Adoption Month is a month set aside each year to raise awareness about the adoption of children and youth from foster care. This year's initiative for National Adoption Month focuses on recruitment of foster and/or adoptive families.

Nevada Department of Child and Family Services is in need of qualified family foster and/or adoptive homes. Recruitment and licensing social workers will be available to answer questions and provide information to the community about becoming a licensed foster parent in the state of Nevada.
