Dayton High School has teamed up with American Family Insurance for the Teen Safe Driver Pledge to compete for cash and other prizes.
American Family Insurance is sponsoring the drive to collect as many online pledges as possible from drivers promising to practice safe driving habits.
Schools across the country are divided into categories based on size. The school in each category that gets the most pledges signed will be awarded $15,000 to use however it wishes. There is no cost to sign the online pledge.
The 10-part pledge says participants will not use drugs or alcohol before driving, or allow passengers in the car who have.
Pledgers vow to wear seat belts, obey curfew laws abstain from texting and talking on the cell phone, among other promises.
Dayton High School students have taken the pledge and are encouraging the community to do the same.
So far, the school is a close second to the leading school, Helias High School in Jefferson City, Mo., in their category.
As of Thursday evening, Dayton High School had 1,674 pledges to Helias High's 1,795 pledges.
The third place school is at 1,622 pledges.
No other Nevada schools are participating for this category. Anyone 14 and older can pledge.
