Trustees adopt parent recognition day

As a mother, school board trustee Lynette Conrad knows how busy life can be. However, she said, parents still must make it a priority to be involved in their children's schools.

"We as parents set the tone, and we are our children's best teachers," she said.

Conrad invited Mayor Bob Crowell to Tuesday's meeting of the Carson City School Board to declare the third Thursday in every November be recognized in support of National Parent Involvement Day.

The day will be dedicated to honoring parent volunteers and encouraging others to participate.

Crowell, a former school board member, said it was a privilege to issue the proclamation.

"I truly enjoy being mayor," he said. "But there's no doubt my heart is with education."

LeAnn Saarem. parent-teacher association board member who also serves on the school district's master plan committee, accepted the proclamation on behalf of all parent volunteers.

"I'm so personally impressed when I'm at the schools and see how many people value their children's education," she said. "I have to give thanks to so many of those who step up and fill the gaps."

Trustees passed the resolution to recognize the parent involvement day.

Conrad created posters to be distributed in places where parents might see them to encourage them to become involved in their children's schools.

"Now more than ever, with these tenuous economic times, parental involvement is invaluable in the success of all children," Conrad said.
