Darrell Moody: You have to feel bad for Brotzman

I, like many Nevada residents, watched Friday's Nevada-Boise State game on television.

Like many, I was frustrated when the Pack fell behind 17-0. With my sister falling asleep on the couch in her Bay Area home, I figured I would go back to my hotel room and watch the rest of the game there where I was free to shout and swear at the TV when things went wrong with the Wolf Pack which was often in the first 30 minutes.

Like many, I was jumping up and down by the end of the game when Kyle Brotzman missed his second field goal of the game and former McQueen star Anthony Martinez split the uprights to snap the 31-all tie and give Nevada a 34-31 win and snap a 10-game winless streak against the Broncos.

Unlike many in Nevada, I truly felt sorry for Brotzman. Hopefully Boise fans will remember all the good he did for three plus seasons and not remember him only for those two missed field goals which cost the Broncos a possible Rose Bowl/national championship berth. No doubt he'd made much tougher kicks than the ones he missed Friday night, and no doubt those two misses will probably stay with him for a while.

• I had to laugh at the game announcers for the Nevada-BSU game. I never heard them once point out the fact that Nevada still had a road game at Louisiana Tech next weekend, and the Bulldogs have been tough on Nevada at home. Nevada still has to win that game to get a share of another WAC title.

• Former Carson High cross country and track standout Richard Shroy was in town on his Thanksgiving break this week.

Shroy just completed his initial season in cross country at Washington State, and he admitted Pac-10 cross country was a big step up from the high school ranks.

"It's a lot of fun; a lot of work," Shroy said, while waiting to visit with Carson assistant track coach Mike Louisiana. "I was probably our 10th man. It was a pretty close group."

Shroy plans on running the 3,000-meter steeplechase and the 1,500 during the spring track season.

• For those of you who followed the PGA qualifier at Dayton Valley Golf Club this past October, five players have advanced to the final stage of qualifying which will take place in Florida next week.

Andres Gonzales finished fifth and Scott Gordon was 17th in the qualifier at Bayonet and Black Horse in Seaside, Calif. Gordon tied for third at Dayton, while Gonzales tied for eighth.

At Craig Ranch in McKinney, Texas, Clayton Rask tied for fifth and Brett Swedberg tied for 19th. Rask tied for 14th at Dayton, while Swedberg tied for 17th.

Jake Younan-Wise tied for 15th at Bear Creek Golf Club in Murrieta, Calif. Younan-Wise tied for 22nd, the last qualifying spot, at Dayton.

• Former Carson standout Josh Peacock finished with 44 tackles, an interception, three blocked kicks, two pass break-ups and three passes defensed for Hiram College this past fall. Peacock finished the season with seven tackles in a 47-24 loss to Ohio Wesleyan.

Another Carson alum, Luke Carter, who just finished his freshman season at Malone University, returned a punt for 15 yards, blocked a kick and had 14 tackles in nine games.
