Dick Dye was in the lower levels of the Sultan's harem while in Turkey. Dye says that while gazing enraptured upon the ladies, one of them sprang forward and wrapped her arms around his neck. She was Elle McShane, a girl who used to dance and sing in the Alhambra during its palmy days. She got herself sold for $7,000, divided the coin with the seller, and is now gathering loose jewelry in the harem preparatory to skipping out to America.

100 YEARS AGO

Petitions are being circulated calling for the submission to the voters the question of moving the seat of Lyon County from Dayton to Yerington.

70 YEARS AGO

Interest in Nevada's forests of petrified woods has reached a height that may result in efforts to have these areas given the status of parks. Numerous leaders are anxious to preserve these great attractions before they are removed by the truckload to other states.

50 YEARS AGO

At the Carson Theater: "Elmer Gantry" with Burt Lancaster and Jean Simmons. Later this week is Cecil B. Demille's "The Ten Commandments."

The oldest operating church in the state is getting ready to embark on a $2.4 million rehabilitation project, according to First Presbyterian Church Pastor Gregg Townsley.

The State Board of Finance approves $100 million in bonds to fund projects including the start of the I-580 project between Mount Rose Highway and Washoe Valley.
