Today is 10-10-10, and the birthday folk among us seem to think that's a good omen. Amelia Wassner turns 88; may you have a wonderful day, Amelia. Craig Rathbun turns 50, providing he lived through last night's party, where several of his old service buddies came to CC to help him celebrate. Father Jerry Hanley is praying for both of them, even though his birthday isn't 'til the 16th. We missed Gail Ruff's, it was on 9-29, which, apparently, meant cake for her and not for us. Paul Cote also celebrates this week. HB to all.

After the 10 a.m. mass on Oct. 17 at St. Peter's on Division Street, TJ Saputra will be putting on a fabulous Indonesian barbeque (probably at 11 or 11:30ish) at the church. It is open to everyone, and they are asking for a good-will offering (otherwise known as donations). The barbeque will be a fundraiser for a local girl with cancer.

Kim Johnston tells us about her grandmother rushing around Kim when she wasn't feeling well. She brought her tea, cookies, fluffed her pillows, etc. Kim asked her if she could get some Pamprin (a pain medication), and her grandmother replied, "Dear, I'm doin' the best I can." Bless her soul.

Correction: We erred when we stated that Terry Srch's husband, John, had passed away. Unfortunately, he did pass away, but his name was Jim. Either we're going blind and/or deaf and missed that completely. We're so sorry, Terry. We also were sorry to read of the death of Barbara Hawley. She was a lovely person.

Lots of lovely songs sung by some great singers. Wild Horse Children's Theater will hold auditions at 1 p.m. Oct. 16 at the Children's Museum for "Cinderella Eats Rice and Beans: A Salsa Fairy Tale." Ages 12-18. Spanish and English speakers needed. You must call for information and an audition time at 887-0438. The show goes on tour in 2011. The Mile High Jazz group, featuring Sheryl Adams, will perform at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Comma Coffee, 312 S. Carson St. $5 admission; 18 and under, free.

Tom Greco is the new president of the Nevada branch of American Public Works. Congrats. The Nevada Appeal is putting on a golf tournament at Thunder Canyon Oct. 15 for Literacy for Life. Call Alex at 882-2111 for info and reservations. Susan Keema just returned from a conference in LA, a Western education regional "think tank" that hopes to boost schools in the area, especially Eagle Valley Middle School. She also verified that over 90 percent of CHS students do graduate; a great feat, considering many schools don't even come close. Good to hear.

This week, the Reno PD arrested Deandre Talley for robbing a woman, then bashing her with his gun ... does this make him a "talley whacker?" (yes, we know we're going to hell.)
