PREP ROUNDUP: Sly, Whitt, Collins advance in tennis

Three Carson High singles players - Blake Sly and Adam Whitt on the boys side and Emily Collins on the girls side - remained alive in the NIAA 4A singles tournament Tuesday afternoon.

Collins, the No. 4 seed, won 6-0 and 6-3 to advance to the quarterfinals against an opponent from Reno, who advanced with a 6-0, 6-2 win.

Sly, the top boys player at CHESS and seeded No. 3, didn't drop a set en route to a 6-0, 6-0 victory. Whitt, seeded No. 7, won 6-0 and 7-5. If Whitt and Sly win their Friday morning matches, they would meet Friday at 3 p.m. at the Caughlin Club in Reno.

Ashley Saarem lost 6-1 and 6-1 in her opening round match. Peter Brinson also lost his opening match, 7-6 and 7-6

Boys doubles starts today at noon at Caughlin Club in Reno and girls doubles begins at 3 p.m., also at Caughlin.

On Friday, boys singles starts at 8 a.m. and the girls begin at 9:30 a.m. The quarterfinals will be later that afternoon. The semis and finals are set for Saturday.

DAYTON FALLS TO YHS

YERINGTON - Yerington knocked off visiting Dayton 25-21, 25-15 and 28-26 Wednesday night.

Dayton fell to 24-6 overall. Yerington is 27-1 overall and 9-0 in league.

"It was the last time our seniors were going to play Yerington, and they really wanted to beat them," Dayton coach Monica Halverson said. "They have never beaten Yerington.

"We started out strong. The second game we had some silly mistakes that gave Yerington the momentum. We fought hard that last game. I thought we were going four games. We lost it on a blocked tip."

In the final game, Dayton led 8-0 before Yerington mounted a strong rally.

Jamie Darragh finished with two aces, four blocks and two kills. Madison Foley finished with nine kills and three digs plus a block. Kathie Arias contributed two blocks, four kills and two digs. Amanda Arana, despite a sore back had seven digs, while Cassie DePew had three blocks and three kills.

Makenna Lommori led the Lions with 14 kills, 12 digs, 16 assists, two aces and an ace. Brooke Aiazzi finished with seven kills and 11 digs, while Maddie Hull-Taylor contributed six kills and nine digs. Alex Roberts had three blocks and six kills while Liz Rogers doled out 13 assists.

DAYTON GIRLS 4TH

ELKO - Led by Maria Inchausti's 86, Dayton High finished fourth for the second consecutive week to end the Northern 3A regular season.

The Dust Devils finished with a team score of 418 at Spring Creek Golf Course. Elko won with a 362. Spring Creek was second with a 394 and Lowry was third at 399.

The 3A state tourney is next Monday and Tuesday at Ruby View Golf Club in Elko. Inchausti, who finished second on Wednesday, was the co-MVP of the league with Kayley Shupe of Elko, qualified to move on along with teammate Lauren Coons, who shot a 101.

Inchausti's round included three birdies, according to Dayton coach Brad Wick.

"It was pretty solid," Wick said. "Maria said that she didn't putt well."

Moki Flores (117), Taylor Ingersoll (114) and Kylie Crosby (145) completed Dayton's scoring players.
