RENO - Carson High's volleyball team came back from a 2-0 deficit to beat McQueen 19-25, 22-25, 25-23, 25-18 and 15-10 in a Northern 4A crossover match Thursday night.

Carson improved to 5-3. Carson hosts Galena next Tuesday at 6 p.m.

"We got some energy off the bench from Alyson Christl and Makayla Drahos," Carson coach Justin Malley said. "Both setters (Courtney Hack and Elizabeth Bennett-Doran) stepped it up."

In game 3, Carson had a comfortable lead only to see McQueen tie the game at 22. The Senators scored three of the next four points to avoid elimination. Christl, according to Malley, had four kills on four straight swings. That led to Carson taking the lead.

Jeanette Van Sickle led Carson with 15 kills, two blocks and three aces. Christl finished with 10 kills and 19 digs, while Elysse Virden finished with eight kills and four blocks. CHS GIRLS WIN TIEBREAKER

Carson High's girls tennis team topped Galena by winning five of six tiebreaker matches after the teams tied 9-9 in regulation play.

Carson, which finished third in league, will play Truckee at the Tahoe Donner Tennis Complex next Tuesday.

Emily Collins, who went 3-0, won her tiebreaker match 7-5. Ashley Saarem, who went 1-2, took her extra set 8-6. Emma Kortmeier went 1-1, but it was her 7-5 win that helped Carson tie the match. In doubles, Jessica Fleming and Ashleigh Potter went 2-1 in the match and won 7-5 in the tie-breaker. Mary Analiza-Ong and Katherine Breeding went 1-2, but bounced back for a 7-4 win in the tie-breaker. Christina Gallegos and Krista Stocke went 1-1, but then came back for a 7-5 win in the tie-breaker.

GALENA BOYS TOP CHS

RENO - The Senators found out just how valuable Blake Sly is to their team Thursday afternoon.

With Sly sidelined by a back injury, the Senators ended up on the short end of a 14-4 score against Galena.

Carson will play in the NIAA team tournament next Tuesday. Sly is expected to be ready for the post season.

Adam Whitt (6-2), Colin McCulloch (7-5) and Spenser Hollenbeck-Pringle (7-6) all won a singles set, while J.J. Aragon and Ben Drozdoff won a doubles set 6-2.

SOCCER

TRUCKEE TOPS DAYTON

TRUCKEE - A miscommunication regarding the start time left no time for a pre-game warm-up, and Truckee scored twice in the first half en route to a 3-0 victory.

"We had just enough time to get our shoes on and play," Dayton coach Jared Miklich said. "It was a big improvement over last year when we were behind 13-0 at the half. I'm happy with the whole team. We played really well.

"We had a couple of opportunities; nothing that bounced off the post or anything like that. We had a couple of (possible) breakaways where we couldn't get past the last defender."

The Dayton coach praised the play of Maribel Ledezma and Samantha Langer.

The Dust Devils return to action Saturday at 11 a.m. when they host Yerington.

DAYTON BOYS LOSE

TRUCKEE - Dayton battled Truckee on even terms for a half before falling 5-1.

The game was tied at 1 at the half. Dayton goalie Edgar Diaz inadvertently knocked the ball into the net after blocking the original shot.

Dayton's score came when Adan Gomez slid to knock a loose ball away from the goalie, then pushed it into the goal while on the ground.

In the second half, Truckee's relentless passing and whittling at the goal proved fruitful.

Truckee scored in the 50th minute and then made it 3-1 on a direct penalty kick. The Wolverines' final two goals came in the final 10 minutes when both teams went to their benches.

After Douglas went ahead, Garrett Schafer drove the Senators to Douglas' 30 before throwing three incomplete passes to end the game.

Carson led 14-6 after one quarter Austin Shaffer scored on a run and then Schafer threw a 45-yard TD pass to TJ Thomsen.
