The Nevada Department of Wildlife, Carson City Host Lions Club, and the Carson City Parks and Recreation Department will host a Kids Fishing Day at the recently opened one-acre Urban Fishing Pond in south Carson City.

This event will be from

7 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 23 at the Carson City Fairgrounds, 601 Old Clear Creek Road.

"The event is free to allow families to bring children to fish in the new pond and introduce them to this great outdoor recreational activity, said Park Planner Vern Krahn.

Event staff will begin taking registration starting at

7 a.m., and registration will continue throughout the morning. There will be raffle prizes for the kids and lots of fun.

For families without fishing equipment, the Nevada Department of Wildlife has a limited amount of fishing poles and tackle available for use during the event. Volunteers will be available all morning to bait hooks, rig tackle, teach basic fishing techniques, shoreline safety, and assist children with their first time fishing.

Children under the age of 12 can fish for free. Children 12 years and older are required to have a current Nevada fishing license with a trout stamp.

In addition, at 9 a.m., a pond dedication ceremony will begin at the entrance to the pond. This ceremony will recognize the public/private partnerships with various grant funding organizations, community partners, and private donors that made this project possible.

Along with these events, the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, Carson City/Storey County

4-H Council will sponsor a Pumpkin Patch at Fuji Park from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. This event will be a fundraiser for the Council and will include games, petting zoo, pony rides, pumpkins, prizes and a costume parade.
