Abowd has right experience for board

Once in awhile a candidate for local public office comes along that you know is just right for the office being sought, and in this case, it is Karen Abowd.

Karen has thrown her hat into the ring for Carson City supervisor, and she will do a bang-up job if we are smart enough to elect her. Karen is well known as a businesswoman, co-owning Adele's with her husband Charlie, operating a highly successful restaurant that has shared its successes with nearly every charity in town, not the least of which is the Boys & Girls Club. Karen is the driving force behind the Green Project and many other programs that benefit the community.

We need someone who has to make a payroll every week and knows how to make budgets work. That is Karen in a nutshell. She has my vote.

Elect representatives to get us back on track

When I served in the military, we had Operational Readiness Inspections, ORIs, to test combat readiness. We will have an ORI of sorts shortly that will determine if our country can recover from the mess our government has created. The mission is to vote for candidates who will get this country back on course to regain its sanity.

We must elect representatives, at all levels of government, who support fiscal responsibility, smaller government, balanced budgets, and lower taxes - things needed for a healthy economy. We must elect representatives who will eliminate wasteful spending, get out of the way of business, intrude less into our lives and exercise common sense, not political correctness. We must elect representatives who love this country and will take any measures necessary to ensure the safety of our republic and its citizens, both at home and abroad.

Are you happy with the never-ending spending of money that we don't have? Are you happy with the endless meddling of the federal government into matters best left to state and local governments? Are you happy with a House of Representatives that recessed without passing several key legislative items including a budget? Do you feel that our country is secure?

If you are unhappy with dysfunctional government, at all levels, then vote for the candidates that you think can best get us back on track.

I pray - if I'm still allowed to - that we will pass this most important ORI with flying colors.

A warning from one who learned the hard way

I just want to send out a word to other car owners - do everything you can to protect your car. My car was broken into, and $1,500 worth of stuff was stolen, mainly electronics. My car was parked in my driveway all locked up. I have no idea how they got in because they didn't break the window, but it looks like they pulled it down a little bit and slipped something down to unlock it. The whole car was ransacked, and my dashboard is destroyed.

I have full coverage insurance on my car, and they're telling me they won't cover my stuff because (they are) upgrades. This makes no sense, and I keep wondering, why me? I'm hard-working, I've graduated from UNR and I'm going back for even more education. I don't do drugs, I pay for all my own stuff, nothing was ever given to me. I work my butt off, and still, the one time I saved my money and did something nice for myself, it was taken away.

I live in what I thought was a decent neighborhood - Northridge - but it goes to show no one is safe. My neighbor's car was broken into as well.

So, people, lock your car, buy an alarm - the alarm is cheaper than your deductible - and do everything you can to protect yourselves. Do not leave any valuables like iPods, etc., in there.

And the cafeteria served Chicken Kiev

I doubted the sincerity of Chuck Muth's statement that Nevada schools are stuck in a Soviet-style government monopoly run by union bosses, so I made a surprise visit to Seeliger Elementary.

Sure enough, the kids were busy dissecting Jimmy Hoffa, while a half-bald man with a stain on his forehead recited his manifesto.

What happens to orphans of black bear hunts?

The Nevada Department of Wildlife commissioners want the NDOW staff to plan black bear hunts for spring and fall in Nevada.

During spring hunts, what will happen to the cubs that are with the female bears that are shot and killed? Will the very young cubs be shot and killed also, or taken home for pets or simply left behind to starve?

In my opinion, spring hunts on black bears are overtly cruel and unusual treatment of wildlife.
