Junior Emily Collins lost in the round of 16 at the 4A Region Tennis Champions-hips to McCall Board of Reno High on Friday, 6-1, 6-3.
It was just Collins' second loss of the season.
"Once she adjusted, she got back into the match," coach Diane Baker-Roberts said.
Collins was down 4-3 in the second before Board closed out the match.
"Emily played better than the score showed," Baker-Roberts said.
Baker-Roberts is looking forward to a strong senior season out of Collins. The coach said Collins needs to play more tournaments during the summer, to "become more confident" in her game.
On the boys side, Carson junior Blake Sly (Sierra League No. 3 seed) advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-0, 6-0 win, before losing 6-3, 6-2 to Joey Saarem from McQueen on Friday afternoon. Saarem, the No. 2 seed from the High Desert League also took out Carson's Adam Whitt - 6-3, 6-2 - earlier.
The Senators' doubles team of J.J. Aragon and Ben Drozdoff, seeded 8th in the Sierra League, lost 6-0, 6-0 to the top ranked team from Reno.
VOLLEYBALL
YERINGTON KEEPS ROLLING
The Yerington volleyball team rolled to a 25-11, 25-12 and 25-11 sweep of Fernley on Friday.
Leading Yerington was Makenna Lommori with 17 kills, eight assists, two aces and a block. Alexander Roberts had six kills and a block; Liz Rogers had 16 assists and four digs; Katie Nicholas had three kills, five aces, five digs and a block; Amber Veil added seven digs and an ace; Maddie Hull-taylor had two kills; and Brooke Aiazzi contributed six kills.
For Fernley, Shannon Ward had six digs, six kills and an ace; Casey Scheller added four digs, three kills, two aces and three blocks; Emily Howell added three digs and two kills; and Haley Lewis added two blocks.
Yerington improved to 28-1 overall and 10-0 in league. Fernley fell to 14-13 overall and 3-3 in league.
DAYTON JVS WIN
The Dayton JV volleyball team defeated Pershing County in three games, 25-14, 17-25 and 15-10.
Alyse Fletcher had seven assists and a dig; Heather Niemi had three aces, two kills; Kelsie Torres has two aces, two kills and a dig; Ashley Vickers had three aces, five kills and a dig; and Chyanne Corley had three kills and a block.
CROSS COUNTRY
Breithaupt leads Dayton
The Dayton cross country teams got a glimpse of the difficult divisional course on Friday when the Dust Devils ran at the Sparks Invitational.
The invite was ran at the Rancho San Rafael park, which will host the upcoming divisional race.
Leading Dayton was sophomore Katrina Breithaupt, who was fourth overall with a time of 21:37.
Also competing for Dayton was: Shanleigh Brethauer who was 21st (24:13); Brenda Cid 36th in 25:51; Isabella Anderson, 53rd, at 27:42; and Caitlin Crosby, 54th, 27:51. A total of 89 runners competed.
On the boys side, Skyler Rose led Dayton with a 19:53, good enough for 19th. Aaron Elissa was next at 21:13 (40th); Brian Hagedorn, 45th at 21:35; Ben Woods 99th at 24:28 and Peter Scott 118th at 26:12. A total of 140 boys ran the race.
