Explain your background and how this qualifies you for the position you are seeking.

For the past 27 years I have served the public as a criminal prosecutor and as a governmental lawyer providing advice and counsel to state and county boards and officials. These functions are identical to my present job duties as the district attorney. I have worked at the Nevada Supreme Court, the Nevada State Attorney General's Office, the Carson City District Attorney's Office and the Lyon County District Attorney's Office. For the past four years I have served as the Lyon County District Attorney supervising a staff of 21 employees. I have extensive criminal trial experience in Lyon County and Carson City as a prosecutor. I have extensive civil trial experience in almost every county in Nevada defending various state and county officers. I have extensive administrative prosecutorial experience regarding state licensed professionals. I have extensive appellate experience arguing cases in the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and the Nevada Supreme Court. I have extensive supervisory experience as the district attorney and as a supervising senior deputy attorney general. I hold a Juris Doctorate from McGeorge School of Law and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Arizona State University.

What are the most important issues that you would address if elected?

My first term emphasis has focused on suppressing drug dealers, gang related crime and sexual assaults on child victims. My lawyers and I have severely curtailed drug dealing activity through a combination of efforts. First, we have aggressively tried cases putting drug dealers in prison; second, we have assisted the sheriff in providing education to students regarding the dangers of drug use; finally, we have aggressively pursued civil forfeiture cases to take away the drug dealer's tools of the trade. We have cooperated regionally to suppress gang activity. We have also aggressively prosecuted those who would sexually assault children. We proactively obtained legislation to protect student victims who were taken advantage of by school personnel. The focus for the next term will remain on suppression of drug dealers, gang members and those who would abuse children and the elderly. Important future issues include obtaining legislation to ban synthetic marijuana and to protect victims and witnesses in gang-related cases who are often afraid to testify. The focus will further continue to develop innovative and proactive methods for addressing juvenile crime such as the use of informal contracts we developed to act early in getting our youth on the right track.

Why should voters choose you over other candidate?

I stand T.A.L.L. for Lyon County and by this I mean that I am Tough on criminals, Always fair, Lowering taxpayer costs and providing Lasting results. In my first term our office has obtained over 1,000 district court convictions, over 8,500 misdemeanor convictions and over 1,800 juvenile dispositions. My charging policies and case resolution policies are always fair and consistent because we treat every case the same no matter where the crime occurred in the county. I have cut the district attorney's operating budget four years in a row. Before I took office, this budget was $1,470,000. The current DA operating budget is $1,250,000. This office remains more efficient than ever handling more cases with fewer resources. The District Attorney's Office has provided lasting results keeping our citizens safe through a series of convictions for serious crimes including murder, drug trafficking, gang related crimes, sexual assault, robbery, elder abuse and alcohol related deaths. I and the assistant district attorney have attended over 100 County Commission meetings. We have also provided advice and counsel to all county officers and officials in a prompt and professional manner and have created the most professional rural prosecutor's office in Nevada.

Explain your background and how this qualifies you for the position you are seeking.

I moved to Nevada in 1981 and graduated from the University of Nevada in 1988. Following law school, I came to Lyon County as a prosecutor. In 1995, I was appointed chief deputy district attorney until December 2000, when I opened a private legal practice.

I have extensive criminal and civil trial experience. I have conducted thousands of criminal prosecutions and have handled hundreds of civil and local government claims. I have significant budgeting experience in the public sector and private industry. I spent 13 years as a public prosecutor and am currently the special prosecutor in the child abuse murder of a 2-month-old infant.

I have participated in numerous community and professional activities during my 20 years here. Currently, I am serving as vice president of Lions Club and president of Little League. I am a Life Member of the NRA and the Nevada Alumni Association, and a member and sponsor of the USO, Operation Local Support, Boys & Girls Clubs and other local groups. My wife, Sandra-Mae, and I have two sons, both honor roll students being raised in Lyon County.

My combination of family, professional, and community experience qualifies me for the office of District Attorney.

What are the most important issues that you would address if elected?

Initially, I will start with the liberal policy of pleading cases. Only 157 felony cases were prosecuted in the district court of the 341 felony complaints filed. More than half of the felons are being let go for a "plea bargain." The trend needs to be turned around. I will prosecute criminals to the fullest and protect victims of crime.

Second, juvenile and gang related crimes need to be prioritized and addressed immediately, not six months down the road. The only true way to stem the rising problem of delinquency is to confront kids immediately and punish them appropriately for their actions.

Third, the DA's spending has increased by $350,000 in the last three years while decreasing prosecution of adult criminals, juvenile delinquents, gang members, drug dealers, and services to the public. Salaried DDA's only work Monday to Thursday and are allowed by the DA to use county cars to drive to and from their out-of-county residences in violation of county policy. I will fully staff the office, will stop the "perks," stick to budgets and cut frivolous spending.

Finally, unlike the current administration, I will assist, support and advise the numerous boards and commissions in Lyon County.

Why should voters choose you over other candidate?

I'm running for district attorney to put integrity, accessibility and accountability back into county government and the DA's Office. As your district attorney, I will be available to the public, law enforcement and county departments five days a week. I will put my 20 years of criminal and civil trial experience and with local government boards and commissions to work for Lyon County. If you need the district attorney's assistance, it will be provided.

I will work diligently to put criminals where they deserve to be - in prison and not on the streets to hurt our children and elderly. I will have an open door policy and be accessible and accountable to the people of Lyon County.

No more black holes in the DA's office. No more unreturned phone calls. The office will be fully staffed five days a week. We will be on call 24/7 for assisting law enforcement and for emergencies. I will roll up my sleeves and get to work to ensure that the DA's Office is working for the public. No more excuses, just hard work and dedication to the people of Lyon County.
