Explain your background and how this qualifies you for the position you are seeking.

Through my experience of owning and running A&W Restaurants, I know that business needs a stable environment to grow. Uncertainty about taxes and new regulations will hurt our economy. I will support a stable business environment that will create jobs.

The public sector is also an important part of our community. I am concerned about state employees and the inequity they face. I have a proven track record of common-sense leadership. During my time on the Board of Supervisors and the Carson Tahoe Hospital Board, I have been accessible to all the citizens of our community and worked to address and solve their problems. I have safeguarded taxpayer dollars and have worked to keep government efficient and effective at providing the vital services we depend on. As a 50-year resident of this community, I can represent AD 40's concerns at the Legislature with credibility and leadership.

My wife Laurie and I have raised our three children here. Our grandchildren live here, and I want to see Nevada remain a place where they are able to have a future as bright and promising as possible.

What are the most important issues that you would address if elected?

Balancing the budget will obviously be our first concern. Until we get final numbers and see the budget the new governor proposes, everything else is conjecture. Along with the budget, I would focus on getting our economy moving again. By creating a business-friendly environment, we can grow the tax base necessary to bring economic stability. We're in the midst of the worst economic downturn in multiple generations, and we in office need to focus on putting people back to work.

We need to give our young people a quality education. If we fail to give our state's future generations a solid and firm foundation in life via a top-notch education, then we have not done our jobs as responsible citizens. I will also continue to address environmental concerns with water quality.

Why should voters choose you over the other candidates?

I have proven, real-world experience creating jobs. Having started my own successful businesses years ago, I have the knowledge and expertise to help get Nevada's economy back on track. My private sector leadership to the Assembly will be a strong voice for small businesses and job creation. After 35 years as a small business owner, and 12 years on the Carson City Board of Supervisors, I know I have the expertise to see Nevada through the current economic crisis. To be successful, the next Nevada Legislature needs leaders who have proven themselves worthy of the public's trust.

I am able to combine knowledge with wisdom and to move forward in a way that will prevent hurting one segment of the community while rushing to help another. I am the only candidate in this race with both business and policy knowledge to help rebuild Nevada.

Explain your background and how this qualifies you for the position you are seeking.

I've served Carson City as Ward 1 supervisor for nearly 12 years and volunteered my time with organizations dealing with everything from college outreach to health care to youth atletics. In that time, I've developed skills and expertise that I feel will be invaluable if elected to AD 40. Those skills are the ability to listen and learn, and to build bridges of cooperation and collaboration between local governments, state officials and agencies, federal agencies, business leaders, nonprofit organizations and individuals.

I currently serve as president of the Nevada Association of Counties, giving me a real perspective on the challenges facing all 17 of Nevada's counties. NACO frequently comments on state issues and we have tried to work with all those who have felt the impact of revenue shortfalls and budget cuts.

I also have been chair of the Carson City Redevelopment Authority for 12 years, and worked with private interests to attract and retain businesses in Carson City. I volunteer as a member of the Western Nevada College Foundation.

What are the most important issues that would address if elected?

Jobs, jobs, jobs. We must get Nevadans back to work, and I would like to establish and encourage programs that would retain the businesses we have, enable them to expand and hire more workers, and to attract new businesses to invest in Nevada.

Renewable energy is an opportunity for Nevada, and I would support programs that provide training for our local workers in these new industries.

Education is also a key issue for me, because we need to provide our youth with a solid education to prepare them for the future. Our economic recovery depends on quality schools. Charter schools, more flexibility at the local level, and innovative programs to meet the needs of all our students are some of the proposals I would develop and support.

Why should voters choose your over the other candidate?

I want voters to support me because of my longstanding and ongoing commitment to work with others to get good things done for our community. I believe in hard work, straight talk and bipartisan cooperation; these are the values we need to solve today's problems.

I am a quick study who isn't afraid to ask questions or do my own research. Many of the problems facing Nevada are being addressed in other states, and I think we can learn from the experiences and successes of others.

I am very proud of our capital city and I would be honored to represent AD 40 in the 2011 Legislature.
