RENO - The Carson High girls golf team finished fifth out of six teams in what is believed to be the team's first trip to the 4A state tournament.
Carson High shot 353, 376 for a two-day total of 729 at Hidden Valley Country Club. The course was playing 5,652 yards and to a par of 72. Green Valley ran away with the tournament with a record-breaking team score of 608. Faith Lutheran (698), Spanish Springs (705) and Arbor View 721) finished second through fourth respectively.
Whitney Nash, who shot a career-best 81 on Monday, finished with a 93 for a total of 174 to lead Carson.
Heather Evans followed a 90 on Monday with a 94 on Tuesday; Lindsay Burroughs shot a 92 Tuesday, she had a 93 on Monday; Elayna Shine had a 92 followed by a 97 for a 189 total; Megan Justice followed Monday's 90 with a 99 on Tuesday; Allie Vondrak shot a 101, 103 for a 204 total.
"The team played really well," coach Terry Gingell said. "We are a very strong team from 1-6. We were very consistent all year. It was a wonderful season. It was very impressive how they played and improved."
Douglas' Bethany Wurster shot an 81-77 for a total of 158, good enough for ninth overall.
Sophomore Alexandra Kaui from Green Valley set a NIAA record with a day one, 8-under par round of 64. She followed it up with an even-par round for a total of 136, six strokes ahead of teammate Jenny Hahn.
INCHAUSTI FINISHES NINTH
ELKO - Dayton exchange student Maria Inchausti shot a 91 on Monday and a 90 on Tuesday for a 3A State tournament total to 181. She finished ninth overall.
Randi Lewis won the individual title at 155 (78, 77) in leading Boulder City to the team title (337-335).
Dayton's Lauren Coons shot back-to-back 110s for a 26th place on the 5,332-yard, par-72 Ruby View Golf Course.
VOLLEYBALL
CARSON TOPS SPANISH SPRINGS
Carson, thanks to some poor serving by Spanish Springs in the first two games, topped the Cougars 25-17, 25-18, 20-25 and 27-25 Tuesday night at Morse Burley Gym.
Carson improved to 8-5 with three matches left.
"The first two games, they (Spanish Springs) had a lot of service errors," Carson coach Justin Malley said. "That's why we won the first two games (easily). They didn't do that the last two games.
"Jeanette Van Sickle had a big match, Alyson Christl passed well and Bailey (Valente) served well."
Van Sickle led Carson with 12 kills, two aces and seven digs. Elysse Virden added 10 kills, Angela Augusta contributed three kills, four aces and 10 digs, while Christl had six kills, two aces, two blocks and nine digs. Valente finished with four kills 19 assists and four aces, while Jazmyn Stokes had 10 digs.
Carson, 8-5 in league and 16-11 overall hosts Wooster Thursday night. A win over the Colts would put Carson into the playoffs. Carson likely would be a No. 3 seed in the upcoming playoffs, which means a road game in the first round.
DOUGLAS TOPS RENO
RENO - Douglas spotted Reno one game and then took the next three to win the Northern 4A crossover match 23-25, 25-17, 25-18 and 25-22 Monday night
Brenna White led the way with 15 kills and 14 digs, while Shannon Dugan had 14 kills and seven digs. Erin Allison contributed three kills, four blocks a dig an two aces. Mia Townsell finished with 17 digs and four assists. Jackie Harper had 39 assists, two kills and 14 digs while Keely Latham and Emily Garcia ended with eight kills apiece.
Douglas is 13-0 in league and 28-2 overall.

SOUTH TAHOE BESTS
DAYTON GIRLS
DAYTON - A slow sluggish start was too much for the Dayton girls soccer team to overcome in a 6-0 loss to South Tahoe on Tuesday.
The Vikings took a 4-0 lead into the second half where the Dust Devils came alive. They held the 3A-leading Vikings to just two second half goals.
Natasha Wells made 11 saves in the game. Coach Jared Miklich praised the play of sweeper Magdalena Landa, who made a handful of good plays. Maribel Ledezma and Lexis Hernandez also played well.
Dayton hosts Whittell at 4 p.m. Thursday.
VIKINGS TOP DUST DEVILS
DAYTON - Dayton made a lineup adjustment and it paid off the Dust Devils held league-leading South Tahoe to one first-half goal.
The Vikings would add three second half goals en route to a 4-1 win on Tuesday.
The Dust Devils goal came in the last minute as Leo Rodriguez scored on a penalty kick from 40 yards out. Rodriguez sent the ball toward the goal and Adan Gomez went to head the ball, but he couldn't connect, but the ball went in the goal.
Edgar Diaz was credited with 15 saves.
Coach Karl Watts praised the play of defenders Raul Leon, Danny Alfaro and Aldolfo Espinosa.
