If at first you don't succeed try, try again.

After missing a wide-open goal from short range with about 10 minutes left in the match, Jason Martinez got another opportunity and he didn't miss this time.

Martinez scored with 7-minutes 36-seconds left to snap a 2-all tie and give Carson a 3-2 win over Wooster Wednesday night.

The win pushed Carson's record to 10-1-3 with away games left at Bishop Manogue (Saturday) and Galena (Monday). Wooster fell to 4-10.

"That was a great game," said Carson coach Eric Masters, who has watched his team post a 2--1-3 record in its last six games. "The second half obviously was a different game for sure. I put it on them in the second half. We didn't change anything. I think the ball was on their side of the field 90 percent of the time.

"We played with great effort. We did a good job of possessing the ball and getting the ball inside. We were kind of flat (after the first goal). I kept putting people in, in hopes of getting a spark."

Martinez factored into all three Carson scores. He scored the first one and the last one, and assisted on Luis Camacho's goal late in the first half.

"That (last goal) was a great individual effort," Masters said of Martinez's score. "That was a huge game-winning goal."

There appeared to be two Wooster defenders near Martinez, but he was able to get the shot off, and the Colts were unable to tie the game up in the closing minutes.

"I saw an open space," Martinez said. "I wanted to attack it and get off a shot. I was keeping my eyes open. I saw them."

Martinez gave Carson a 1-0 lead in the third minute of the game off a Sam Hutchinson pass.

Approximately seven minutes later. Wooster knotted the game at 1 when a hand ball was called in penalty box area. Daniel Villa scored easily on the penalty kick.

The Colts went ahead 2-1 in the 22nd minute when Kevin Avila drilled a shot that hit the crossbar and dropped behind keeper Marco Magallon.

Late in the half, Carson was awarded a direct kick. Martinez tapped it to Camacho, who blasted it past the Wooster keeper, tying the game at 2.

Carson dominated the second half, but was unable to convert some pretty good opportunities until Martinez came through.

• The Carson JV squad improved to 13-0-1 with a 3-1 win over Wooster.

Robert Abundis scored twice and Jorge Rodriquez added a goal and an assist.

Gustavo Villagrana played well in goal. He has allowed just eight goals all season and has nine shutouts. Nate King, Danny Alonso, Kruz Kerver and Andrew Shoaf were praised of their defensive play by coach Joe Briggs
