130 YEARS AGO

A Capable Sheriff: Two years ago there was a clamor for change in the Sheriff's office. No reason was advanced why Swift should not remain, except he had been there several terms and some wanted a change. Well, they got a change and it was anything but satisfactory. The Democrats put a pan in who had experience, but mistakes were made that would not have happened under Mr. Swift's administration.

100 YEARS AGO

Yesterday afternoon the boys of the high school were taken with a very severe amount of itchy feet, and nearly every member deserted the class and left empty benches for Prof. Hunting to talk to. The beautiful autumn days affect the lads as did their forefathers. There is not one man who does not suffer from the call of the wild and hike to the fields.

70 YEARS AGO

The Civilian Conservation Corps announced yesterday that 26 CCC camps are scheduled for operation in Nevada from October 1, 1940 to March 31, 1941. The program provides for employment of 5,200 CCC enrollees on conservation projects in Nevada. A total of 1,500 CCC barracks camps operate in the nation.

50 YEARS AGO

Ralph Pilsors 197-513 paced Crystal bar to a 3-0 whitewash of Capital beverages in Comstock league at Carson City Bowl here Tuesday. Lou Henderson had 195 and Flo Coletti 454 for the losers. Buzz Goodman's 194-488 led Delta Saloon in a 2-1 victory over Sharon House, paced by John Zalac's 191-510.

There are no last minute changes for the gloomy weather forecast for Nevada Day.

Virginia City wins the beard contest "by just a hair."
