PREP ROUNDUP: Carson freshman football spanks Battle Mountain JVs

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Carson High's freshman football team opened its 2010 season with a 42-13 win over Battle Mountain's JV team Friday night.

Carson led 35-0 at the half, and then scored early in the third quarter. Battle Mountain scored the last two touchdowns of the game, the second one coming on the final play of the game.

Joey Thurman ran for 125 yards and a score, while Andrew Gutierrez added 90 yards and two touchdowns. Gehrig Tucker and Austin Kiesow scored a touchdown apiece, while Derek Schafer threw for 75 yards and another score.

Andrew Cooper and Jesse Knight played well on the defensive front for Carson, while Cody Cunningham and Austin Shaffer played well at linebacker. Tucker and Gutierrez played well in the secondary. TJ Thomsen had an interception and a 32-yard run on a reverse.

CARSON VOLLEYBALL SWEPT

RENO - Carson went 0-3 in the first day of play at the High Sierra Invitational at Wooster High School.

Carson lost 25-21 and 25-7 to Ponderosa, lost 25-10 and 25-11 to Pleasant Valley and lost 25-15 and 25-20 to Yerington.

Carson will play two morning pool games at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. today, and then the tournament reverts to single elimination.

"We played badly," Carson coach Justin Malley said. "We had a real bad day. We started to struggle a little (against Ponderosa). We kind of mentally collapsed. The teams we played were good."

IMPRESSIVE DEBUT FOR

DAYTON'S INCHAUSTI

Maria Inchausti, an exchange student from Spain, shot an 87 to place second at the season-opening 3A girls golf tournament at the Genoa Lakes Resort Course.

Inchausti finished seven shots behind South Tahoe's Morgan Murphy, who shot 80 to grab medalist honors.

Dayton brought just three golfers to the event: Lauren Coons shot a 103, while Moki Flores had a 136.

Elko won the event .

followed by Lowry, Spring Creek, Fernley and Truckee.

The next 3A tourney is next Friday in Fallon.
