SPARKS - Arran Rumbaugh scored in the 38th minute to give Carson High a 1-0 win over Reed in a Northern 4A girls soccer match Tuesday night.

Carson remained unbeaten at 1-0-1 entering Friday's home opener at 6 p.m. against Damonte Ranch. The game was originally scheduled for Saturday, but it's a testing day so the game was moved up a day.

"We played pretty well," Carson coach Randy Roser said. "Not having any preseason games makes it a bit challenging to get players and the system worked in. We were 100 percent better than last week."

Roser lauded the defensive work of defenders Natalie Stevens and Allison Cowan. He also praised the work of Kate Schulz and Kiahna Pimental.

Goalie Emmy Heller was credited with six saves. Carson outshot Reed 26-11.

DOUGLAS HOLDS OFF REED

The Douglas High volleyball team overcame a rash of mistakes, including 16 service errors, to hold off a feisty Reed squad 25-18, 20-25, 25-20, 29-27 Tuesday night.

Douglas pushed ahead to the Game 1 win before 14 errors in Game 2 led to the Tigers' first game loss of the season, bringing to an end a 17-game win streak.

Reed never fell more than six points back during the match and overcame a four-point deficit facing match point in Game 4 to tie things up before the Tigers eventually grabbed the 29-27 win.

Douglas improved to 9-0 overall and 1-0 in league play (all Northern 4A games count toward league standings this season) while Reed dropped to 0-1.

Brenna White led the Tigers with 15 kills, Shannon Dugan had 12, Erin Allison had five, Keely Latham had three and Emily Garcia, Mia Townsell and Amanda Wartgow each had two. Garcia had a team-leading seven blocks, White had five, Carly McCullough had three and Allison had two. Townsell finished with 24 digs while Dugan had 10. Jackie Harper dished out 24 assists and Hailey Sclafani had 18 assists and four aces.

The Tigers will host Northern Nevada powerhouse Yerington today at 6 p.m.

CARSON BOYS TRIUMPH

Adam Whitt won all three of his singles matches and Blake Sly and Peter Brinson won twice apiece to lead Carson to a 10-8 win over South Tahoe Tuesday afternoon in Carson.

Carson improved to 2-1.

Whitt lost just three games in three sets, while Sly lost just two games in his two sets. Brinson won 6-1 and 6-2 before dropping his third set 6-1. Coach Kevin Fallon chose to rest Sly for the last round because Carson had a commanding lead.

The doubles tandems of J.J. Aragon and Ben Drozdoff, Connor Fallon and Jacob Trapp and Casey Reid and Mathew Boggs all went 1-2.

GIRLS DROPPED BY TAHOE

South Tahoe won seven of the nine singles matches en route to an easy 13-5 win over winless Carson.

The only singles wins for Carson came from Emily Collins, who rebounded from a 6-2 loss to Rebecca Roberts to win her next two sets by identical 6-3 scores.

Coach Diane Baker-Roberts said that Ashley Saarem played very well in her two-set appearance though she came out on the short end of the score both times.

Jessica Fleming and Ashleigh Potter went 2-1 in doubles, while Caitlin Dalessio and Camilla Dudley won their only doubles set 6-2.

"They (South Tahoe) are tough," Baker-Roberts said. "Rebecca Roberts is one of the toughest players in Northern Nevada. Emily settled down (after the match against Roberts) and played great her other two matches."
