Ninth annual Stroke to Help set

Soroptimist International of Carson City along with corporate sponsor Great Basin Imaging hosts the ninth annual Stroke to Help Golf Tournament.

The tournament will be Sept. 25 at Eagle Valley Golf Course in Carson City. Check-in will be at 8 a.m. with a 9 a.m. shotgun start. The format will be a four-person scramble; players can choose to play the east or west course. The cost is $85 per player, which includes 18 holes of golf, cart and a tri-tip and chicken barbecue.

The Democratic Women's Club will host its monthly meeting at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Grandma Hattie's.

Featured speaker is Boone Cutler, local author of "Voodoo In Sadr City," about his experiences as a soldier in Iraq. After 11 months in Iraq, Cutler was medically evacuated and spent two years at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Call 884-3037 for more information.

Model T seminar scheduled

The Silver State Model T Ford Club will host nationally recognized Model T engine restorer Milt Webb at a seminar with a goal to teach Model T enthusiasts to prepare their cars for touring and to drive them properly.

The seminar will be from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at 35 Lewers Creek Road, Washoe Valley.

Want to recycle your faux Christmas Tree?

That old artificial Christmas tree can go to a worthy cause. The Carson City Library Foundation is preparing its annual New Year's Eve fundraising event and needs 16 artificial trees.

Foundation volunteers are ready to pick up donated trees in Carson City, Dayton or Minden/Gardnerville and provide receipts for your tax deductible donation.

"This event raises several thousand dollars for our local library each year," said Phyllis Patton, library board of trustees chairwoman. "Last year, volunteers took down their Christmas trees early so they could loan them to us for the event. This year, we're hoping to grow our own inventory of artificial Christmas trees so volunteers can keep their family's holiday decorations up longer and assist in other areas of the event."

The donated trees will help create a New York "Tavern on the Green" atmosphere at the Foundation's New Year's Eve party, scheduled from 6-9 p.m. Dec. 31 at the State Library and Archives. The event also will feature a gourmet buffet, music, raffle, live and silent auctions and a Times Square-style ball drop.
