SOCCER
Carson tops damonte
It was a struggle but the Carson girls varsity soccer team knocked off Damonte Ranch 2-1 in 4A play on Friday.
Carson coach Randy Roser said the Senators didn't play well to start, but after some adjustments at halftime the team finished strong.
Carson took a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute when Kenzie Tillitt, a goalie who is now playing forward, scored on a pass from Allison Cowan.
Carson was able to move the ball forward quickly on the goal, something Roser and the coaching staff emphasized heading into the game.
Damonte tied the game just before half.
"We were having communication problems in the first half. We got on them at half, and got them focused," Roser said about his young squad.
Carson played better in the second half and took the lead for good in the 72nd minute on a second effort goal by Katherine Schulz.
Emmy Heller stopped three shots in goal for the Senators, 2-0-1. Carson outshot Damonte 13-8.
Roser praised the play of Josilyn Daggs, Kiahna Pimental, Kaitlyn Holmes, who Roser said did a good job of getting the ball forward, and Schulz.
Roser also said playing the first game on the turf at Carson High took some time to adjust to. The Senators have played and practiced exclusively on grass so far this year, which is much slower than turf. He said the players will be better adapted to the turf the more home games they play. Carson has until Tuesday to prepare, because that's when rival Douglas comes to CHS for a 7 p.m. game.
