Fire department seeks grant to replace laid off firefighters

A grant that may allow the Carson City Fire Department to rehire firefighter positions that have been cut as a result of city budget cuts will be brought before the board of supervisors when it meets Thursday.

Approval is being sought to apply for a U.S. Department of Homeland Security Staffing and Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant not to exceed $700,000.

The board is required to authorize any grant application in excess of $25,000.

Although the grant does not require a match, there are certain benefits such as employee contractual items that are not covered by the grant. A fiscal impact of $75,000 is expected to replace the benefits for three positions over a two-year period.

Other items on the agenda are:

• As the Liquor and Entertainment Board, as recommended by Sheriff Ken Furlong, an action will be considered to revoke the catering liquor license for a special event at The Schmitt House located on Highway 50 East. A business check revealed that, among other things, gang graffiti was painted on the interior wall in clear view of all participants at some time prior to the start of the event, no license for the sale of alcohol was on the premises and at least one security personnel was identified as a known violent, documented gang member. The sheriff determined that a rap concert was catering to gang activities in a warehouse bordering a residential zone.

• As the board of supervisors, whether to award a contract not to exceed $1,424,450 for water bond projects.

• Action to award a $228,852 contract for the Fulstone Wetlands Enhancement project.

• Action to approve a request for a two-year extension for a tentative subdivision map for 57 acres for Combs Canyon I and for 25 acres for Combs Canyon II.

• Action to approve bills and other requests for payment by the city manager for the period of Aug. 1-Sept. 5.

• As the Board of Health, members will hear a report from Health & Human Services Director Marena Works about current activities, programs and services.

• Hear a report of results from the National Association of Local Boards of Health.

• Develop a list of priorities from the report.
