Sheryl Crow's concert in Reno tonight is canceled

RENO - The Sheryl Crow and Brandi Carlile concert scheduled for today at the Reno Events Center has been canceled because of illness.

According to doctors' Crow is unable to perform because the sickness affects her throat. Refunds will be available to those who have reserved tickets to this show. All reimbursements will be given at point of purchase. For further information, contact your ticket distributor.

Pre-dance classes offered

The Performing Arts Project is accepting new students, ages 3 and older, for beginning instruction in ballet, tap, jazz and tumbling.

The studios are located at 2556 Precision Drive, #E, Minden, off Johnson Lane and Wildhorse.

Free art reception at WNC

The public is invited to a free reception in the WNC galleries, 4:30-6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 21. Exhibiting artists Dr. Hal Starratt and Maria Partridge will speak briefly about their work and answer questions, beginning at 5:15 p.m.

The WNC Carson City art galleries are open weekdays, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. All exhibitions and related activities are free and open to the public.

Literacy tutor training rescheduled

Carson City Literacy Volunteers needs tutors to teach dyslexic and ESL learners.

Training for new tutors has been shortened and rescheduled to:

Oct. 13, 6-9 p.m.

Oct. 14, 6-9 p.m.

Oct. 16, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

All sessions are held at the Nevada State Library and Archives Building, 100 N. Stewart St. Tutors do not go into student's homes to tutor.

Training gives people the tools and confidence needed to tutor without prior teaching experience. Cost is $25 or scholarships are available.

Monthly swing dance scheduled for Sept. 25

High Sierra Swing Dance Club presents its monthly dance Sept. 25 at the Brewery Arts Center's Grand Ballroom, 449 W. King St., Carson City. There will be a lesson at 7 p.m., with the social dance from 8-10:30 p.m.

Partners are not required. Lesson is $7 for HSSDC and any swing dance club members or $10 for nonmembers; dance $7 for members of swing clubs and $10 for nonmembers. Join the club that night, and the dance is free. Artisans' Cafe will be open.

Tahoe club donates to BGC

The Lake Tahoe Corvette Club has donated $2,000 to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada.

In addition, said Wayne Manning, club president, the car club gave $2,000 to the Children's Cabinet in Incline Village and $2,000 to the Boys & Girls Club of South Lake Tahoe.

"(Donations) come from the profits of our annual car show in June at the Montbleu Resort Casino & Spa," Manning said.
