Commission to discuss proposed room tax hike

The Carson City Parks and Recreation Commission will discuss the project plan to improve JohnD Winters Centennial Park Athletic Field Complex on Tuesday.

Over the past year, the Carson City Convention & Visitors Bureau, the city's lodging facilities' representatives and the parks and recreation department have been exploring ways to retain currently booked adult softball tournaments at the park's upper athletic field complex, said Parks and Recreation Director Roger Moellendorf in a report to the commission.

The lodging facilities' representatives met Aug. 12 to discuss the possibility of raising the city's room tax by 2 percent to cover improvements at the complex in order to retain adult softball tournaments, he said.

At the meeting, city staff was asked to develop a five-year capital improvement project plan to accomplish improvements to the sports field complex based on a projected revenue stream of $250,000 per year.

The tournaments provide a much-needed boost to lodging facility revenues each year in Carson City.

Urgent needs at the facility include replacement of existing infrastructure such as ADA accessibility, scoreboards, fencing and equipment. Short-term, mid-term and long-term future needs also were identified.

The commission also is scheduled to discuss its goals Tuesday, and to hear staff updates regarding the urban fishing pond, fairgrounds use and the Fulstone Wetlands trails project.

Carson River Advisory Committee

The Carson River Advisory Committee is scheduled to meet this week to address the following agenda items:

• A willow-planting project by Carl Nellis who is working on his Eagle Scout project.

• Plans for the committee's annual Riverfest education day.

• Discussion of river habitat damage due to inappropriate motorized vehicle use on the riverbank and in the riverbed of the Carson River.

• Reports on the installation of signs warning of aquatic invasive species at various city river properties.

• Discussion of the Carson River Planning Conference.
