Dayton made quick work of new 3A opponent South Tahoe on Friday night winning 25-22, 25-17 and 25-15 at South Tahoe.
Dayton came out slow but turned it on to improve to 5-1 in league and 19-3 overall.
The Dust Devils continue to succeed with their team approach. Madison Foley and Amanda Arana both had two aces to lead the team, and McKenzie Kielty added one. Arana led the team in digs with six, Foley added three, and Kielty, Brittney McArthur and Kathie Arias all had one. Jamie Darragh led the team in kills with 12, while Foley and Arias added six apiece. Cassie Depew contributed four kills and Erin Edison added two.
Kielty led the team in assists, again with 26.
Coach Monica Halverson praised the team's fundamentals, consistent and hustle. She also said the team served much better Friday than in previous matches.
"The game was slow but they kept at it," Halverson said. "They played together and didn't make any silly mistakes."
Dayton returns to action at Silver Stage on Wednesday.
• Dayton JV won 25-10, 25-21, against South Tahoe. Destinee Serawop had one ace and six digs, Taryn Schlacta added six digs and Ashley Vickers had three aces an a kill. Makaila Marshall finished with two kills and a block.
GIRLS GOLF
INCHAUSTI MEDALS FOR DAYTON
Dayton's Maria Inchausti shot her fourth straight 87 en route to medalist honors Friday at the Winnemucca Golf Course. The exchange student from Spain has finished, first, second, third and fourth in league matches - all while shooting an 87.
"Maria's consistency is starting to pay off," Dayton coach Brad Wick said.
Lauren Coons carded a 102, Moki Flores carded at 123 and Taylor Ingersol turned in a 141 for a team score of 453. Dayton was fifth out of six teams at the tourney.
Ingersol, Kyle Crosby (167) and Elena Watts (206) just picked up the game of golf at the beginning of the season and continue to show improvement, Wick said.
Dayton plays at Truckee on Thursday.
CROSS COUNTRY
DAYTON GIRLS WIN, BOYS 3RD
The Dayton girls cross country team won its home meet Friday with a score of 25 points. Leading Dayton was Katrina Breithaupt who won in 24 minutes. It was Breithaupt's first meet of the year. Teammate Shanleigh Brethauer was second (24:48). Brenda Cid was fifth at 25:59, Kaia Galloway was sixth (27:04) and Isabella Anderson was 11th at 28:52. Dayton was without the services of Rhael Ransom.
Fallon was second, followed by Yerington and Silver Stage. A total of 22 girls ran in the meet.
On the boys side, Dayton finished third. Fernley won the meet with 30 points, followed by Fallon (55) and Dayton (100). Silver Stage, Sparks, Rite of Passage and Yerington placed fourth through seventh respectively.
Leading the Dust Devils was Ethan Galloway who was third (19:58). Skyler Rose was fifth (20:57), Aaron Elissa was eighth (21:46), Ben Woods was 38th (25:39) and Peter Scott was 46th (27:13).
Fernley's Logan Woodward (19:33) won the race. Dayton ran without Brian Hagedorn who was ill.
Coach Shawn Anderson said he is seeing improvements week after week with the top runners.
