Each autumn, as the aspens change from green to gold, local artists in the small mountain town of Markleeville, Calif., open their studios to share a wide variety of artwork.
The theme for the eighth annual Markleeville Autumn Open Studio Tour is "Art in the Aspens," and will take place 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
The Sierra is famous for its display of color, and the artists of Markleeville are gaining recognition for their displays of art. This annual event continues to grow in popularity. Last year, more than 400 people attended the two-day event.
The tour of the artists' studios is free. Maps with directions to the Markleeville-vicinity homes and studios will be available during the weekend at the Alpine County Chamber of Commerce.
There will be 16 artists participating in the tour.
The artwork on display will include the watercolors of Peter Chope and Sandy Baenan, the creative confectionery of Debra Esteban, the oil paintings of Charles Muench, the topiary work of Jeff Brees, one-of-a-kind jewelry by new artist Erin Kelly and many others.
Bright yellow and gold banners will be hanging throughout town, marking each artist's studio.
