130 YEARS AGO

A British tourist, stopping at the Ormsby House, hired a boy to dig him some bait, as he wished to fish at the Mexican dam. When the tourist reached the river he pawed at the can of worms and only found one. On his return he berated the boy. "Well, wasn't one worm enough." The tourist reflected while glancing at his basket: "Ba jove, it was you know. What a decidedly clever boy, to be sure."

100 YEARS AGO

Four members of the "ocean to ocean" automobile party were arrested in a raid by Elko Sheriff J.C. Harris. The arrested men were held under $250 bonds. Members of the party claim they did not know gambling was prohibited in Nevada.

70 YEARS AGO

Preliminary steps to form the Ormsby County Aero Posse to perform air searches for lost persons, fire fighting and control. Posse members will be sheriff's deputies by appointment only with no compensation.

50 YEARS AGO

Sharon Gold is named the August, 1961 Nevada Appeal calendar girl.

20 YEARS AGO

Renovation work at Carson High School has stopped, with the possibility the high school will not be completed by the start of the school year because of permits required for asbestos containment.

10 YEARS AGO

The city's water supply got a much needed break following a 24-hour ban on watering.
