RENO - JT Cockerill, former golf star at Carson High and a member of Thunder Canyon Country Club, won the three-day 2011 Nevada State Amateur championship Friday at Hidden Valley Country Club.

Cockerill, last year's state match-play champion, shot a 54-hole total of 10-under-par 206 after rounds of 69, 68 and 69 to grab a two-shot victory over Joe Sanders, who had a final-round 70.

Jeff Duncan, the brother of Wolf Run and Dayton Valley owner Tom Duncan, tied for seventh with a 217. Duncan was only four shots off the lead after 36 holes, but finished with a 4-over-par 76 on Friday.
