Heartfelt thank you to community from Red Cross

We are very fortunate here in Northern Nevada because we have a cadre of well-trained volunteers who give generously of their time to provide compassion and hope to our neighbors when they are dealing with adversity.

On Nov. 18, volunteers responded quickly to the call regarding the Caughlin fire, opening two shelters and providing more than 100 overnight stays. Thanks to the community support, Red Cross served more than 800 meals and snacks to first responders and to the impacted communities. Nearly 100 volunteers provided support during the days that followed the initial call. Mental health volunteers provided emotional support and Red Cross trained caseworkers worked with those people who lost their homes to provide financial support and referrals to additional resources.

Many of these families never expected to receive assistance from the Red Cross - they never thought they would be in this situation. But thanks to our many financial supporters, the Red Cross was able to meet their immediate emergency-related needs. And thanks to many local businesses, these families received numerous offers of assistance from them as well.

We expect the Red Cross to be there when disaster happens. And we are. We are at the large disasters like the Caughlin Ranch Fire, but we are also at the scene of the single family home fires, apartment fires and mobile home fires. Since Dec. 4, Red Cross volunteers have provided emergency assistance to 35 people who were displaced due to home fires.

And, the Red Cross is there for military families. Thanks to people in Northern Nevada, our Holiday Mail for Heroes program was a huge success, bringing messages of thanks to family members of our military members as well as local veterans and their families. Our emergency communications system is available 24/7 to ensure critical needs are immediately addressed.

Additionally, 22 of our local Red Cross trained personnel provided nearly 5,000 volunteer hours supporting people affected by the large-scale tornadoes and spring flooding which occurred in other states.

So at this time of year, when we contemplate the occurrences of the year and what we are thankful for, thank you to the community for supporting us, and thank you to the volunteers who give of themselves without regard to what they receive in return.

Thank you for making food drive a success

Advocates to End Domestic Violence would like to thank the many who helped make this year's Share Your Christmas Food Drive a success for our agency.

Efforts were spent, from bagging and delivering items to volunteering at the Governor's Mansion to receive or sort the many items donated.

With the changes that came our way for this year's event, we would like to thank those who donated between the hours of 6-10 a.m. to support our agency and the clients we provide with services.
