Tigers close out 1-3 week in San Diego

Don't let the 1-3 record fool you, the Douglas high boys basketball team had a solid week at the prestigious Torrey Pines Holiday Classic in San Diego.

"We just saw very solid teams all week," said Douglas coach Corey Thacker. "Teams that executed on offense, that could knock down shots and could play good defense.

"It's probably the best teams we'll see all year and we stayed in the game with them. We had two chances to tie at the end against Corona Roosevelt."

Douglas fell to Roosevelt, Villa Park and Palm Springs, but clawed its way into each game. The Tigers also defeated Birmingham out of Los Angeles.

The Tigers led early against Villa Park, but eventual fell behind and couldn't come back in a 75-61 loss.

"They were the best team we've seen all year," Thacker said. "It was good, though. We found out a lot about ourselves as a team. We saw where our strengths were and we had some weaknesses exposed. Those are things we can take, improve and build on as we get into league play."

Junior standout Hunter Myers had a strong week, pouring in 24 points in the win over Birmingham.

"He had some big dunks in traffic and hit a couple 3-pointers," Thacker said. "It was a good tournament for him."

Thacker said he was particularly impressed with senior guard Nick Maestretti, who had a solid week in all facets of the game.

"He'd been popping up heading into this tournament, but he really took it to a new level this week," Thacker said. "As a group, we just saw a lot of late-game situations that will be important for us. It was good experience."

GIRLS

Douglas fell to Highland, Arizona Thursday night but closed out the Las Vegas Holiday Classic with a win over Moapa Valley Friday morning.
