REC: Swim powers take state lead

The two biggest teams in the state - the Sandpipers of Nevada and Boulder City-Henderson are running 1-2 after Friday's competition of the Nevada State Swimming Championships at the Carson Aquatic Center.

Results from Saturday's portion of the meet were unavailable.

The meet continues today and runs through Monday. Action gets under way at 8:30 a.m. each day.

The Sandpipers had 691 points, while Boulder City was at 438. The Reno Aquatic Club was third at 142 and the Lake Ridge Swim Team was fourth at 108. Northern Nevada Aquatics (37), Douglas Dolfins (34) and the host Carson Tigersharks (26) were in the next three spots.

Carson had just six swimmers entered on Friday night, and three of them managed to score points.

Kaly Branco, swimming in the 11-12 500-yard freestyle, dropped five seconds off her previous best. She finished 10th in 6:11.52, earning 10 points for her team. Teammate Ashley Meyer finished 20th in 6:49.61.

In the 13-14 1,650-yard freestyle, Eli Everest was 10th in 19:59.06, earning the Tigersharks 10 more points. Charlee Bradley was 18th in the same age group, clocking a 21:55.79. Everest dropped 13 seconds off her time.

Abby Pittman, swimming in the 15-18 1,650-yard free, dropped 1 1/2 minutes off her previous best to finish seventh in 18:45.37. The effort qualified her for the Far Western meet. Teammate Danielle Stanka dropped 58 seconds off her 1,650 free time. She was timed in 20:32, good for 17th place and a Junior Olympic qualifying time.

There were two double winners on Friday.

Catie Miller of the Sandpipers won the 13-14 1,650-yard free in 17:56.08 and the 400-yard IM in 4:34.01. Logan Houck, also of the Sandpipers, won the 13-14 400 IM in 4:23.52 and the 1,650-yard free in 17:10.47.

Also performing well was Hannon Daigler of the Sandpipers. Daigler won the 400 IM in 4:02.76 and finished second in the 1,650-yard free in 16:24.68.

McKenna Miller of Reno Aquatics won the 11-12 500 free in 5:28.22, while Sammy Harrison of the Boulder City-Henderson squad won the girls 15-18 1,650-yard free in 17:24.97. Olivia Barker of the Sandpipers won the 15-18 400 IM in 4:26.45 and Carter Grimes of the Sandpipers won the 11-12 500 free in 5:36.67. Dylan Bunch of Boulder City-Henderson won the 15-18 1,650-yard free in 16:12.09.
