Shooter: John Anderson, while in a highly invigorated state from inordinate use of the "rosey," fired a pistol shot through the door of a house of ill fame. Judge Cary fined the culprit $50.

Legislature: There is talk of getting up a bill to protect the public against baggage smashers on railroads, making it a felony for a man to smash the top of a trunk by throwing bars of lead or bullion on it.

Sweepstakes: Capt. Tom P. Emerich, an economic professor, proposed a "sweepstakes blitzkrieg to give Adolf Hitler a kick in the pants." Emerich proposes a series of national lotteries. Holders of lucky numbers would be exempt from federal taxes.

50 YEARS AGO

Governor Grant Sawyer and his wife will head Nevada's representation at John F. Kennedy's inauguration as President ... and will fly to Washington from Reno.

20 YEARS AGO

Twenty-four new legislators will receive an overview of how the system works when they arrive for a two-day orientation. The 1991 session will begin January 21.
