Fundraiser set

for Dayton woman

A 21-year-old Dayton woman who suffered complications after giving birth on Jan. 16 is in ICU at Saint Mary's Regional Medical Center in Reno.

Yvonne Dorado has spots of brain damage due to lack of oxygen, and her family needs the support of the community, said organizer Holly Stevens.

A candlelight vigil will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday near the emergency room parking lot at Saint Mary's in Reno.

Also, the Dayton Smiths and Dayton High School will hold a spaghetti feed fundraiser at 6 p.m. Feb. 4 at Dayton High School.

Radon poster contest winners announced

Alexandra Resney, a homeschooled student from Gardnerville, has won the 2011 Nevada State Radon Poster Contest. Taking second place was Melissa Liang and third place, Cade Walley, both from Hyde Park Middle School in Las Vegas.

The Nevada poster contest winner was presented a $50 check earlier this month.

This is the second year that the Nevada Radon Education Program of University of Nevada Cooperative Extension has offered the contest to children, ages 9 to 14. The goal of the poster contest was to raise awareness of the harmful effects of elevated levels of indoor radon gas.

This year's contest had 54 entrants from students in Douglas, Lyon and Clark counties.

Carson City extends ice rink season

Carson City Recreation Division has extended skating season for the Arlington Square Ice Rink through Feb. 27.

Extended season hours of operation will be

• Family skate special:

3-7 p.m. Mon-Thurs. Cost is $5 including skates.

• General skate: 3-6 p.m. and 7-10 p.m. Friday; 11 a.m.-2 p.m., 3-6 p.m. and 7-10 p.m. Saturday; 1 a.m.-3 p.m. and 4-8 p.m. Sunday.

Cost per session is $5 youth (3-12), $7 general (13-up) and $3 skate rental

CASA volunteer training set for Feb. 3

CASA of Carson City will hold volunteer training from 6-9 p.m. Feb. 3 at the Carson City Juvenile Court, 1545 E. 5th St.

CASA volunteers are appointed by Carson City's Juvenile Court as guardian ad litem for children in child welfare court cases. The CASA volunteer speaks up for the best interests of the child.

Being a CASA volunteer requires patience, caring, research, writing, good communication skills and commitment. There is a background check, an interview and 30 hours of training.

Anyone who thinks they might be interested is encouraged to take the first two classes, one per week, of the 10 class sessions to learn more, and then decide whether they are a good fit.

'Houston, we have a problem' slideshow

The Jack C. Davis Observatory Star Party open house is Jan 29, featuring Mike Thomas' slideshow/-

powerpoint presentation: "Apollo 13: Houston we have a problem!"

This lecture tells the story of the Apollo 13 moon mission that turned a potential tragedy into a triumph of the human spirit.

Observatory will open at 6 p.m. and the lecture will begin at 7:30 p.m.

There will be telescope viewing on the patio, weather permitting, and tours of the facility for new visitors. The evening is free.

Waldear wins watershed award

Debbie Waldear is the recipient of the 2011 Andy Aldax Carson River Watershed Award for exemplary service in conservation and protection of the Carson River watershed.

The Carson Water Subconservancy District award was created im 2007 to recognize individuals or organizations for significant contributions in promoting and achieving the Carson River Watershed Vision Statement.

Waldear was nominated for founding the Friends of Hope Valley, a group dedicated to the protection of Hope Valley for the sake of open space and recreation.

"Waldear has been a tireless volunteer as an active member of the Alpine Watershed Group and regularly participates in the citizen water quality monitoring and bio-assessment programs, as well as the CWSD "Get On the Bus" tours and other community outreach programs," said Kathi Lawrence, spokeswoman for the CWSD.

The award was presented to Waldear at the CWSD Board meeting on Jan. 19.

Michael Hohl Honda hosts child ID day

Michael Hohl Honda will host a child identification clinic from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday with M.I.L.K (Managing Information on Lost Kids), a collaboration with Farmers Insurance and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Parents who attend the event will be able to acquire digital identification for their children, and provide current images and detailed characteristics to more than 17,000 police stations nationwide, should their child go missing.

The event will provide residents with the opportunity to enroll in the digital program to protect lost children and educate parents nationwide. It will include a demonstration and display by the Carson City Sherriff's Office and D.A.R.E. units.
