Local trapshooters win U.S. title

Over the weekend the Capital City Hot Shots took first place for JV squads in the

2011 U.S. Open Youth Trapshooting Championship sponsored by the Youth

Shooting Sports Federation.

The Capital City Gun Club sponsors the growing team of young shooters who meet every Friday night at 5:30 at the Capital City Gun Club located at 3590 Arrowhead Drive in Carson City (775) 882-9904.

Taylor Ashby- 13 (who also took 1st in the intermediate individual class, shooting 193 out of 200 targets); Jake Getz, 16; Alex Knutsen 16; Heather Knutsen, 18; and Micah Davis, 18, are members of the team.

Although Carson was the smallest team, it won the division. The group is coached by Rusty Wolbers, Bob Gibson and Greg Wright.

The group is always looking for new members. The age range is from 9 to 19.

Tennis tourney

set for Centennial

The Carson Tennis Club's annual Fall Classic is set for Sept. 16-18 at Centennial Park.

Divisions include men's and women's singles and doubles, mixed doubles, century doubles (combined ages over 100) and a super century division (over 120 years of age) is being contemplated if there is enough interest.

The cost is $20 for singles and $30 for doubles. Two matches are guaranteed.

Youth tennis event

set for August

The Carson Tennis Club is hosting a youth tennis tournament Aug. 20-21 at Centennial Park.

The two-day event features experienced and novice players from all over the region. Experience players will compete in the Challenger Division, while less-experienced players are encouraged to play in the Novice Division.

Players will be grouped in the 10s, 12s, 14s, 16s and 18s. Players are guaranteed two matches. Entry fee is $30 per player.

Local kids golf

tour starts Sept. 18

The U.S. Kids Reno Fall Junior Golf Tour starts Sept. 18 with a tourney at Eagle Valley East.

Five additional tournaments are scheduled, including Sommersett Country Club, Thunder Canyon and Silver Oak, which will host the finale on Oct. 23.

The tour will be operated by First Tee of Northern Nevada and Chris Dewar, who will be the tour director.

Football clinic set

for Carson High

Blair Roman, Carson High football coach, is hosting a skills clinic today at CHS starting at 5 p.m. with registration with instruction getting under way at 5:30 p.m. and lasting until 9 p.m.

The clinic is open to kids between the ages of 5 and 14. The cost is $10 per participant.

EV golf titles

Kim Boykin won low gross with an 81 and Beth Juru won low net with a 66 to capture individual honors at Eagle Valley's President's Cup.

In the first flight, Robin Pointe won low gross with an 83, while Maggie Abbett won low net with a 70. Carol McIntyre was second place low net with a 71, one shot better than Lisa Crowley.

Nancy Martinelli won first place low gross in the second flight with a 96. Lynn Collins was the low net winner with a 66. Laura Hunt shot 68 for second place low net, while Gerri Murphy was third with a 69. Beth White shot 108 to win low gross in the third flight. Julie Kepler shot 71 to win low net. Anita Treants was second place low net with a 73 , while Cindy Sands and Gail Nelson tied for third with a 74.

Owings, Wagner

Roland Owings and Buzz Wagner shot a net 57 to win Silver Oaks Senior Men's Club Travel Day event at Lakeridge Golf Club.

Mark Hanzlik and Gary Poley were second with a 58, while Clyde Ikehara and David Montgomery were third with a 60. Tony Barbaria and Terry Thomas were fourth with a 61.

Trio teams up

to win at T. Canyon

Ron Babey, Paul Lumos and Steve Archer shot a 125 to win Thunder Canyon Men's Club Cha Cha Cha event played July 15th.

Vern Hamilton, Saul Singer, Dave Mello and Brian Sear were second at 128, while Larry Goodnight, Rob Jennings-Teats, Fran Menante and Mike Judge tied for third at 131 with the trio of Mike Schellin, Bret Andreas, Randy Plymell and Jerry Hughes, and Butch Cattanach, Larry Greenman and Robert Gorrindo.

On the women's side, Elaine Colgan finished with 12 points to win the Chicago Points Tournament. Monica Pike was second with nine points, Kathy Cockerill was third with eight points and Carla Watts and Barbara Plymell tied for fourth with seven points.

RTO's Swing for

Autism event set

The second annual Big Swing for Autism event, part of the Reno-Tahoe Open, takes place Aug. 2 at 8 a.m. at the Grand Sierra.

All proceeds benefit the Autism Coalition of Nevada. Former St. Louis Cardinals star Donovan Osborne, who attended Carson High, will emcee the event.

For $500, business teams will compete for the longest drive across the Sierra Bay in front of GSR. The winners will receive dinner for eight at the Charlie Palmer Steakhouse. The top three prizes are eight clubhouse season passes, eight season passes and eight good-an-day passes.

Individuals for $50 (if pre-registered) or $75 (day of the event) will compete for a night's stay in a suite and dinner for two at Charlie Palmer's Steakhouse. Other prizes in the individual division are two clubhouse season passes, two season passes and two good-any-day passes.

Spoke, Squeeze Play

tied for top spot

The Spoke and Squeeze Play are tied for first place in the Mosconi Division of the Carson City chapter of the American Poolplayers Association.

Both teams have 26 points. In the high tier, Juan Pina has a 20-18 lead over Jamie Day and Robert Haddix. In the middle tier, Kim Dandos has a 20-17 lead over Rachel Hurt, Jason Kochamp and Eric Richards. In the low tier, Joshua Bice and Gloria Rodriguez are tied for first with 17 points apiece.

In the 9-ball Comstock Division, Tied & Soldiered has a 515-514 lead over 9-Spoke. Jeff Cordova has a 28-14 lead over Kenneth Gabbard in the high tier. In the middle tier, Lawrence Gloistein leads Lisa McCulston 26-23, and Joshua Bice leads Pam Fitzgerald-Wermes 20-18 in the low tier.

In the Dayton 8-ball Division, Union Bruisers has a 38-36 lead over O.G. Squeeze. Casey Richards leads Bill Howard 13-8 in the high tier, while Michael Hoopes has a 27-25 lead over Richard Jenson in the middle tier. In the low tier, Scott Dorey and Joseph Sbragia are tied with 18 apiece.
