Leisure club to install officers tonight

The Leisure Hour Club of Carson City will hold its installation of officers at 6:30 p.m. today at the Carson City Nugget.

The incoming officers are: Arthur Skipworth, president; Myron Carpenter, first vice president; Daniel Neverett, second vice president; Patricia Carpenter, secretary; Christine St.Leger-Barter, treasurer; and Dottie Kelley, director at large,

Paula Cannon will act as the installing officer and Paul DuFou, well-known Carson City pianist, will provide music for the evening.

The Leisure Hour Club, one of Carson City's oldest non-profit organizations having been formed in September of 1896, will celebrate its 115 anniversary this year. For further information, call 885-2542.

Made In Nevada Marketplace today at mall

Community Band honors Armed Forces

The Capital City Community Band will pay tribute to military members in an upcoming concert at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William St.

For this concert, the band will perform music that highlights memories of past wars as well as provide reverence and recognition for the people now serving in the armed forces.

"This concert will focus on remembrances of World War II and the Civil War," said CCCB Director Richard Doede. "We will also perform a medley of the service songs titled 'A Tribute to Our Armed Forces.'"

Flautists Robin Link and Diana Ruby also will be performing "Concertante" by Cimarosa.

"We use local talent," Doede said. "Our soloists are local, with one from Reno and the other from Carson City. The other members of the band are volunteers from the community as well."

This concert is the last of three formal concerts the band puts on annually. The band also performs one for the holiday season in December and one with a children's choir in March. All of their concerts are free to the public.

NASA gear at Lyon County Fly-In

The 2011 Lyon County Fly-In continues a 15-year tradition of bringing aviation opportunities to the youth of the area. The Fly-In is being held on Armed Forces Weekend, this Saturday and Sunday at the Silver Springs/Lyon County Regional Airport.

Pilots from throughout the West fly in for the day or weekend to showcase the planes that many of them restored by hand.

The Lyon County Fly-In promotes aviation and education through the Young Eagles First Flight program, where youth ages 8 to 17 can fly free with a general aviation pilot. This encourages young people to consider their future in math, science, or aviation.

The Experimental Aircraft Association chapter in Truckee will provide the pilots, who volunteer their time, their plane, and their expertise. The Fly-In has flown a state-wide record number of Young Eagles in the past two years.

As part of the partnership with NASA, the Fly-In has exclusive hands-on exhibits of NASA space gear; including a space suit, complete with helmet and gloves, and space shuttle tires, both nose gear and main gear, along with various displays.

The Fly-In is family-friendly with crafts, food, entertainment, raffles, classic cars, motorcycles, military, gunfighters, hot air balloons, and much more.

Dayton library planning chocolate bake-off

Amateur bakers are invited to compete for prizes and bragging rights in the Death by Chocolate Bake-off, sponsored by the Dayton Valley Branch Library.

The bake-off and bake sale will be 4-6 p.m. June 4 at the library at 321 Old Dayton Valley Road.

The public is invited to enjoy chocolate treats and may purchase tickets that include a chance to win several door prizes. Come enjoy a variety of chocolate delicacies, a sampling of sweets. Candies, fudges, fruits, cookies, crackers, pretzels; a vast variety will be available to dip in sweet, warm chocolate fondue. There also will be activities for the kids and vendor booths to browse.

Tickets are on sale now at $5 adults; $2.50 for children 5-12; children 4 and younger are free. For tickets call 246-6212 or go to the Dayton Valley Branch Library.

Vendor booths are available for $15 a space plus a raffle item.

To enter the chocolate bake-off, registration forms are available at the library. Stop by or call to reserve a spot. The contest is open to both adults and youth 12 and younger.

'Happy Senior Tours' heads to Boomtown in June

The Carson City Senior Center's "Happy Senior Tours" group will travel to Boomtown on June 14.

The bus will load at 7:45 a.m. in the east parking lot of the senior center. It will depart at 8:15 a.m. sharp, returning to the center at 4 p.m.

Cost is $17, and the casino will give each guest $10 in free play, plus a food voucher for the day.
