State track meet: Dayton's Arias halfway to throwing three-peat

LAS VEGAS - Carson freshman Alex Drozdoff finished seventh in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 11 minutes, 54.90 seconds at the 4A state track meet in Las Vegas on Friday.

"It was a fast race," Drozdoff said. "I was trying to hang with people but the went really fast. I tried to run my race and do the best I could. That first lap was really fast. I started out too fast and was really tired by the end."

Damonte's Meagan Wood won in a time of 11:15.10.

Drozdoff was the lone Carson runner to compete during the first day of the state track meet. Competing today will be pole vaulter Eric Garcia, the Senators' 1600-meter relay team of Trey Jensen, Clint Page, Gabe Pongasi, Taylor Bradshaw, Andrew Cowan and Conner Fallon. Pongasi also qualified in the triple jump.

The girls' squad will be represented by Josilyn Daggs (100 hurdles, 800 relay), Kaitlyn Holmes (800 relay), Elena Thurman (800 relay) and Allison Cowan (800 relay).

On Friday, Douglas' Amanda Brazeau cleared 11-9 to win the girls pole vault by three inches over Bishop Manogue's Madison Mills. The junior repeated as state champion for the Tigers.

In the shot put, Desieree Cage finished ninth throwing 34-3. Legacy's Avione Allgood threw 47-11.75 to win.

DAYTON

Dayton senior Kathie Arias took her first step toward three-peating as a double winner by winning the shot put with a throw of 39-7. The soon to be Cornell University product made it interesting on herself Friday night.

After a solid first throw, she relinquished the lead and need to come through on her final throw to edge out Elko's Anna DuBois.

"It was a little tense at the end," admitted Dayton head coach Mike Paul.

Teammates Tylor Bard and Cody Yeater both cleared 6-feet en route to tying for second in the high jump. Elko's Evan Brown cleared 6-2 to win.

DJ Ply cleared 8-6 en route to a third place finish in the girls pole vault. Spring Creek's Reisa Saddoris cleared 10-feet for the title.

Manuel Castenada threw 115-9 in the discus, good enough for seventh place. Andrew Bart from Spring Creek won easily with a toss of 160.

Madison Foley's triple jump of 32-1 was good enough for fifth. Fallon's Madison Murray jumped 34-4.5 to claim the title. Dust Devil teammate Ashley Vickers jumped 31-3, good enough for eighth place.

The 4x100 relay team of Devon Cates, Alyse Fletcher, Lettie Lynch and Maribel Ledezma finished fifth with a time of 53.57. Fallon won the event with a 51.53

Cameron McGifford finished eighth in the 110 hurdles (16.59).

2A TRACK

YERINGTON

Patty Guerrero cleared 8-6 to claim the pole vault title for Yerington. She was six inches higher than her nearest competitor.

Peyton Morris' last throw was good enough to claim a state championship. Morris threw 125-2 to win the boys discus title. He won the event by more than two feet. Teammate Donovan Foli was fifth at 106-6.

Kevin Foster ran a 23.43 in the final to claim the 200 meter dash title. Teammate Alex Brown was eighth at 23.9.

Jazzmin Bryan finished second in the 3,200 with a time of 13:22.36. Chloe Dodge from Incline won at 13:05.25.

Tori Cooper placed fifth in the girls 100 meter dash (13.24) right in front of teammate Patty Guerrero (13.38).

The 4x100 relay team of Aubrey Schmid, Bryan, Guerrero and Copper finished third running a 54.27. Incline (52.31) won the event.

1A TRACK

SIERRA LUTHERAN

The Sierra Lutheran 4x800 relay team of Johnny Harms, Donavan Harrison, Nathanael Williams and John McRae cruised to a nine second win in claiming the event. Sierra Lutheran defends its state title finishing at 8:44.69, nine-seconds ahead of Sage Ridge (8:53.10).

Nathanael Williams claimed the 1,600 title running a 4:41.80 winning by nearly two seconds. Teammate John McRae was fourth (4:52.06).

In the 110m hurdles, Conner Love took home fifth (17.9) followed by Taylor Anderson and Ben Sever (19.13 and 22.13 respectively) in sixth and seventh. Ricky Finley from Spring Mountain (16.32) won the event.

In the tightly matched 200m dash, Nick DePaoli was third (23.48). John Pamplin of Spring Mountain (22.58) won the event. DePaoli's teammates Bradley Goins ( sixth in 24.41) and Nathan Conover (eighth in 24.87) also competed.

In the 400m dash DePaoli won with a 50.17. Goins, Conover and Harms finished fourth, fifth and sixth respectively.

In the high jump, Ben Sever tied for sixth clearing 5-2. Mineral County's Anthony Gattrell won clearing 5-10.

In the discus, Alex Borgman tossed 116-11 to win.

The 4x400 relay team of Becky Grabow, Brittany Rupert, Erin Henry and Sierra Stulac were just edged out by the team from Tonopah. Tonopah's team finished in 4:31.47, while Sierra Lutheran finished in 4:31.89.

In the girls 800m, Grabow finished third (2:30.33), while Henry was sixth (2:36.42).

In the 3,200 Grabow defend her title winning easily (12:24.23) over Henry (12:53.69) who finished second.

The 4x100 relay team of Rupert, Caitlin George, Olivia Temple and Stulac took fourth running a 57.89. The team improved their time by almost four seconds from last weekend
