Arias, Maestretti win state titles

LAS VEGAS - Dayton High's Kathie Arias completed her three-peat by winning her third straight discus title at the NIAA 3A State Track & Field Championships Saturday at Del Sol High School.

Arias, who won her third straight shot put title on Friday, threw 129-2 to beat Fallon's Esther Mauga by nearly six feet. Arias failed in her bid to set a new state record in the event. The record still stands at 131 feet.

"She's probably the only girl that won a state championship that was disappointed," Dayton coach Mike Paul said. "She tensed up a little. She really wanted that state record."

Dayton also brought home medals in the girls' 3200 relay, the girls' 800 relay, the girls' 1600, boys shot put and the girls' high jump.

Madison Foley achieved a PR in the high jump with a third-place leap of 5 feet. Katrina Breithaupt broke her own school record for the second straight week with a 5:34.64 to place fourth in the 1,600 and Manuel Castaneda placed fourth in the shot with an effort of 45-7.

The 800 relay quartet of Maribel Ledezma, Lettie Lynch, Alyse Fletcher and Kelsey Torres was timed in 1:53.57. The 3,200 team of Breithaupt, Sara Torgerson, Mallorie Gribble and Brenda Cid ran a 10:27.76, a school record.

In the 200, Lynch was seventh in 28.31, Ashley Vickers was seventh in the long jump at 14-2 1/4, while Fletcher was eighth at 14-2. Cameron McGifford was sixth in the 300 hurdles at 43.05, while Cody Yeater was eighth in the triple jump at 39-8 1/4.

"I'd hoped for better finishes out of our long and triple jumpers," Paul said. "It was nice to see Madison jump the way she did. I think it was only her third or fourth meet. Between injuries and club volleyball, we haven't had her a lot. It was very good for a freshman."

4A TRACK: Maestretti WINS GOLD

LAS VEGAS - Douglas' Nick Maestretti vaulted 15-3 to win the state title, beating out three Las Vegas vaulters en route to the title.

Carson's Eric Garcia vaulted 14-6 to finish fifth in the event. The 14-6 tied his PR. His height tied for third, but he dropped to fifth because he had more misses.

The Senators' Josilyn Daggs finished sixth in the 100 hurdles with a time of 15.94. It was a fast final, as Candice McFarland of Legacy (14.35), Reed's Gabby Williams (14.55) and Centennial's Karli Johonnot (14.73) all went under 14.75.

Carson's 1600 relay squad of Taylor Bradshaw, Clint Page, Gabe Pongasi and Trey Jensen finished sixth in 3:28. The girls' 800 quartet of Elena Thurman, Kaitlyn Holmes, Allison Cowan and Daggs were eighth at 1:49.78.

Pongasi finished seventh in the triple jump with a 42-0 1/4 while Douglas' Bri Burnside was fifth in the discus at 112-1.

1A TRACK: WILLIAMS, LOVE GRABOW WIN

LAS VEGAS - Becky Grabow, Nathaneal Williams and Conner Love all brought home individual titles on the final day of the meet.

Williams won the 3,200 by nearly 24 seconds over teammate Donovan Harrison. Williams was timed in 10:19.39. Grabow won the 1,600 in 5:36.94 and Love took the pole vault with a 12-6 effort.

Sierra Lutheran won the boys' 1,600 relay, as the quartet of Bradley Goins, Johnny Harms, Nathan Conover and Nick DePaoli ran a 3:32.08. The SL boys were second in the 400 relay, clocking a 47.77. Love, Kody Miller, Taylor Anderson and Jacob Medlock ran on the team.

Nathan Conover was second in the 800 at 2:03.69, while teammate John McRae was sixth at 2:13.44. DePaoli was second in the 100 at 11.51, Goins was fourth at 12.03 and Medlock was seventh at 12.12. Love was third in the 300 hurdles at 43.94, while Sierra Stulac was third in the 400 (64.54) and fifth in the 200 (29.25). Brittany Rupert was eighth in the 200 (31.02).

2A TRACK: BRYAN, NEVILLE WIN

LAS VEGAS - Jazzmin Bryan won the girls' 1,600 and Riley Neville won the pole vault to lead the way for Yerington on Saturday.

Bryan was timed in 5:42.17. She was fourth in the 100 hurdles with a 17.65. Neville cleared 13 feet in the pole vault and took second in the 300 hurdles (42.40).

The Yerington 400 relay squad comprised of Christian Hazel, Neville, Kevin Foster and Alex Brown took first in 45.53.

Josh Lauderdale was third in the pole vault at 11-9 and Skylar Bryan was fourth in the pole vault at 11-6. Patty Guerrero was fifth in the 200 in 27.66 and Cindy Bonilla was eighth in the discus with an effort of 70-4.

YERINGTON WINS

BASEBALL TITLE

LAS VEGAS - Yerington topped Needles 10-6 to win the NIAA State 2A baseball championship at the Meadows School.

Yerington reached the title game by beating Whittell 18-8. The Lions opened with a 6-4 win over The Meadows.

Cole Aiazzi picked up the win, allowing four earned runs. He helped himself at the plate with two hits and an RBI. Tyler Peeples homered in the win for Yerington which finished 26-9.

The Lions led 8-0 after three and held on for the win.

In the semifinals, the Lions pounded out 20 hits in the five-inning victory. Sam Monohan went 3-for-4 and drove in four runs, while Jarrod Adams went 3-for-5 and drove in three runs. Peeples also had three hits.

Aiazzi, Corbin Cliften, Mike Garner, Tommy Kinsey and Curtis Stubblefield all had two hits in the win over Whittell. Kinsey and Aiazzi drove in two runs apiece.

YERINGTON GIRLS WIN

SOFTBALL CROWN

LAS VEGAS - Katie Nicholas tossed a three-hit shutout to lead the Lions to a 2-0 win over White Pine in the 2A softball title game. The Lions finished 24-6.

A passed ball and a Taylor Richardson single accounted for the Lions' runs in the fifth.
