Carson JV goes undefeated

Carson High JV football coach Paul Carter knew he had a pretty good squad when the season started, and the players didn't disappoint him.

Carson capped an 8-0 season Friday night with a 35-0 win over Reno Friday night.

The Senators averaged 43.8 a game and allowed 8.3 an outing. Twice Carson allowed just one score in addition to posting three shutouts.

"I knew this was a good team," Carter said Friday night. "Last year's freshman team was good. Our ultimate goal is to go undefeated every year."

Carter praised the work of assistants Kiko Vega, who ran the offense, Shelby Tuttle and Rod Estrada.

Two of the top defenders were Cody Cunningham and Andy Cooper, but Carter, who teaches at Carson Middle School, was full of praise for his secondary of Aaron Perez, Kyle Denning, Austin Kiesow and Gehrig Tucker.

The offensive showed plenty of firepower with Garrett Schafer, Austin Shaffer, Anthony Estrada, Andrew Gutierrez, Nevin Elliott and Tucker in the skill positions.

"Garrett is a good player," Carter said. "I think he will do good things at the next level."

Schafer played the second half of varsity games against Hug and Galena this year, and threw a TD pass against the Grizzlies.

Carter lost the services of Gutierrez to the varsity several games ago, and Carter said Estrada came in and picked up the slack. Shaffer quarterbacked the team to the win when Schafer was called up to varsity for the Galena game.

After watching Hug and Wooster play in the boys' soccer semifinals, I think there is a need to change the overtime rules in high school soccer.

Is there a reason we can't go to a shootout after 80 minutes of regulation play? As the rule stands now, if the teams are tied after 80 minutes, they play a 15-minute sudden-death overtime period. If the teams are still tied, another sudden-death 15-minute period is held. If the game is still tied a five-round shootout is held.

Ludicrous. Let's go straight to the shootout, and if you want to make it more interesting go to a seven or 10-round shootout to decide things.

Especially in November when the weather is so crappy here, nobody wants to watch overtime soccer. A shootout? That's totally different.

Kudos to Randy Roser and the Carson soccer program for its regional championship win over arch-rival Douglas.

It was the first regional win for Roser, who took over the girls' program in 2003 after several years as the boys coach.

Carson may not have seen the last of Douglas. The Senators play Pahrump Valley at 2 p.m. Friday at Damonte Ranch with Bishop Manogue and Douglas meeting in the noon game. The winners would play on Saturday for the state title.
