Teacher's Contest: The teachers' contest is growing in interest daily, and before the close of the month will be very lively. The vote for teachers' contest stood as follows last evening: Mrs. Brumsey - 76; Miss Wasson - 48; Miss Martin - 40; Miss Morton - 6; Miss Wagner - 6; and Miss Berdenwerper - 2.

70 YEARS AGO

Hair Raisers: Official army sources state that many soldiers with a tendency towards baldness are raising a new crop of hair. The new helmets gently massage the scalp as the men go about soldiering.

50 YEARS AGO

Washoe City, once a thriving community, will be the scene of ceremonies to mark Washoe County's 100th anniversary. A centennial monument will go up where hardy settlers supplied timber and foodstuffs for the mines of the booming Comstock Lode. The monument will contain a time capsule with historical data. Honored guest will include County Recorder Delle Boyde, whose father was a deputy sheriff in Washoe City when it was the county seat.

30 YEARS AGO

Historic district: Residents and property owners in central Carson City have a great deal to gain if the city goes ahead with plans to form a historic district. The proposed district is generally bordered by Mountain Street on the west, Curry Street on the east, Fifth Street on the south and Fleischmann Way on the north.

Births at Washoe Medical Center: To Molly and Kyle Walt of Carson City, twins, a son and daughter.

• Sue Ballew is the daughter of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.

130 YEARS AGO

Orphan train: The Children's Aid Society in New York City speaks of a New York boy having wrecked a train on the Burlington, Cedar Rapids and Northern Railroad. The name of the leader of the gang that wrecked the train is George Verdenberg who was sent West with a trainload of orphans from New York. Although raised in a very comfortable home, his criminal instincts began to assert themselves. The sentiment in the community is decidedly opposed to the importation of any more orphans from the slums of New York.
