Love to be discussed at worship service

Western Nevadans are invited to learn more about "The Language of Love" at a worship service 10 a.m. Saturday at the Carson City Community Center, Roop and William streets. The session is sponsored by Eckankar, Religion of the Light and Sound of God.

Not just another 'Night at the Museum'

The Carson City Leisure Hour Club will host Peter Barton as their monthly speaker beginning at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday upstairs at the Carson Nugget.

Following dinner, his presentation titled Not Just Another "Night at the Museum" takes a look at the State of Nevada's dynamic group of museums and how they are adapting to the challenges they are facing today.

Barton serves as the administrator for the Nevada Division of Museums and History, overseeing the development, operations and programs of Nevada's seven state-sponsored museums. Prior to relocating to Nevada, Peter spent 35 years managing museums and historical organizations from coast to coast.

In addition to his professional work, Barton serves on the Preserve Nevada Board and as appointed chair of the Carson City Cultural Commission.

The Leisure Club of Carson City is the oldest continuously meeting organization in the city, having been founded in September 1896. The group's activities continue to support its goal of promoting the knowledge on important issues, science, music and literature.

CV Footprinters monthly meeting scheduled

The Carson Valley Footprinters will hold its monthly dinner meeting on Oct. 20 at the Carson Valley Inn in the Town of Minden. A no host bar starts at 6 p.m. and meeting begins at 7 p.m. Guest speakers will be WWII bombardier gunners, Ernie and Everett Steddman and their buddy Richard Wheeler. Author to speak during Sunday service

Jerry Cook, pastor and author of books "Love, Acceptance and Forgiveness" and "The Monday Morning Church" will be speaking at the Fountainhead Foursquare Church at the 9:30 a.m. Sunday service.

Wood's work to be featured in BAC gallery

Dayton artist JoAnn Wood is the next featured artist in the "Summer Features Show" at the Brewery Arts Center Gallery. Wood's works in water color, pastels and acrylics will be displayed on the gallery's coveted back wall from Oct. 13-21

Lyon Town Hall meeting set

Lyon County will host another Town Hall meeting at 7 p.m. Oct. 26 at Silver-Stage High School, 3755 W. Spruce St. in Silver Springs.

The county is very interested in hearing from the public about their concerns, thoughts and ideas. Lyon County wants to use this process to inform the community of what is happening in Lyon County and the issues facing the county. Officials urge all to come and participate with their local government and help Lyon County understand concerns and issues.

Model T Ford Club to meet

The Silver State Model T Ford Club will hold its monthly membership meeting with dinner at 6 p.m. and the meeting at 7 p.m. Oct. 20 at Grandma Hattie's Restaurant, 2811 S. Carson St.

The Silver State Model T Ford Club is made up of Model T Ford enthusiasts from Western Nevada and Eastern California.

"Whether your car is running, is a project car or you're just interested in Model Ts, we welcome your attendance at our monthly meetings," said Chapter Acting President Wendell Newman. "Our members help each other with restoration questions and get together for regular activities to learn more about their Ts and to have fun with these century-old cars."

Halloween candy buy-back goes to the troops

Dr. Kevin Olson, DDS, will participate in the Halloween candy buy-back program for the troops this year.

Olson will be buying candy from youngsters at $1 a pound, up to $5. He will then ship the candy to America's troops.

The buy-back will be from 5-8 p.m. Nov. 4 at his office, 4530 S. Carson St., Suite 5.

"Halloween candy represents a warm memory of life back home, and children who care enough to donate candy in support of our troops," said spokeswoman Paulette Scherr.

Yaple's Ballroom offers costume party, showcase

Yaple's Ballroom is offering its costume party and showcase from 6-9 p.m. Oct. 22 at 315 N. Carson St.

"Students have been working very hard on dance routines to present. Routines vary from hustle to waltz to belly dancing. Dress up for our costume contest, or just for fun," said a spokeswoman Tiffany Hopkins.

Special Halloween treats such as witches fingers, eyeballs and dead man's brew will be provided, and dancing will be offered.

Governor's banquet to benefit victims of local tragedies

Gov. Brian Sandoval will host the inaugural Nevada Day Governor's Banquet at 6 p.m. Oct. 27 at the Summit Pavilion at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, 2500 E. Second St.

The event will be a fundraiser to benefit victims and families of the Carson City IHOP shooting and the Reno Air Races.

Cost is $40 per person or $100 to be seated at the head table with Gov. Sandoval. Head table is limited to just 12 people.

A no host bar will take place at 6 p.m. and a table service dinner will start at 7 p.m.

Semi-formal attire preferred. The evening includes a raffle, silent auction, live entertainment, special guest appearances and a Nevada birthday cake-cutting ceremony.

Austin's House is the only emergency children's shelter in rural Northern Nevada. Children are placed at Austin's House after being removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect. Austin's House has cared for more than 170 children since opening in September 2007.

Food Day to benefit local food banks

The Nevada State Health Division will sponsor Food Day in Nevada, a statewide effort to fill the shelves of all the food banks and pantries in the state with protein-rich food, Oct. 24-28.

The theme is "It's Chili Outside - Let's Make Nevada Hunger Free." The goal of the statewide campaign is 500,000 cans of chili or other high protein food.

Cans of chili can be dropped off at any local food bank.

Western Nevada College offers farm marketing workshop

Challenged by today's industrial food system, many small farms are looking for new and creative ways to sell their products directly to consumers.

Western Nevada College Specialty Crop Institute offers a workshop on "Direct Marketing for Small Farms" from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Nov. 5 p.m., at the WNC Carson campus, 2201 West College Pkwy.

Cost is $35 when registering by Oct. 27 and $45 after. Lunch is included.

Participants will learn how to develop and execute a simple, effective marketing plan to fit their small farm enterprise. Industry experts will present sessions that include branding and authentic messaging, media relations, effective signs and displays, Facebook and social media, and more. They will discuss sales options including farmers markets and farm stands, restaurants, subscription farms, u-pick, and other direct-marketing opportunities.

Lattin Farms announces fall festival, corn maze

Lattin Farms announces its 14th Annual Fall Festival and Corn Maze beginning Oct. 7 in Fallon.

Highlighting the festival is the Tractors & Truffles Corn Maze. This year's maze was inspired by Tractors & Truffles, a small farm agriculture and arts event that will be celebrated in Fallon on Oct. 15. Visitors going through the maze will find a trail quiz filled with tractor trivia questions.

The fall festival is a jubilee of family activities. Visitors can take a hayride to the pumpkin patch to find the perfect pumpkin, build a life-size scarecrow at the Scarecrow Factory, or treat the little ones to a cow train ride or a trip through Critterville.

The fall festival will be open in October, from 5-8 p.m. on Fridays, and 10 a.m.-8 p.m. on Saturdays. The maze will close at 6 p.m. on Oct. 29.

Explore Russia at the library

Carson City Library will present Explore Russia @ Your Library at 6 p.m. Oct. 20 in the library auditorium. Slava Kolupaev will present the program.

Kolupaev was born in Pyatigorsk, in the Stavropol Region, near the Caucasus Mountains in Southern Russia. He served in the military and completed four years of university in Russia.

Kolupaev came to Carson City in 1990 and became a United States citizen. He recently retired from the Nevada Department of Corrections.

Explore the World @ Your Library is a bimonthly program hosting a series of presentations by people from other countries or by those who have traveled to far-away places.

Previous countries that have been explored through this series include Hong Kong, Nicaragua, England, Israel, Bolivia, Columbia, Vietnam, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Taiwan, the Azores, Portugal, Ecuador, Ethiopia, India, Afghanistan, Ireland, Tunisia, South Africa, New Zealand, and Italy.

History of Old Washoe City presented

Gary Ballew will provide a slide show, "Images of Old Washoe City," for the Carson City Research Group at 10 a.m. Oct. 22 at the Carson City Library, 900 N. Roop St.

Old Washoe City at the north end of Washoe Lake was founded in August of 1861 and gradually declined in population when the railroad came through in 1874. Just a few structures still exist today.

People interested in history are invited to find out about what was once a thriving city - what it looked like in the 1860s and what it looks like today.

Also, included in the meeting will be a discussion of Carson City's hidden historic homes to be planned as part of a walking tour. Attendees should bring ideas they want to discuss or answers about local history they'd like answers to.

This event is hosted by Sue Ballew and Trent Dolan, Past Pages writers for the Nevada Appeal, and Eleanor Kolbe, historian.

RSVP announces local training for caregivers

The Retired Senior Volunteer Program will hold its quarterly training session for caregivers and RSVP respite care volunteers from 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 20 at the University of Nevada Reno Cooperative Extension office in Carson City, 2621 Northgate Lane, Suite 12.

Dori Ward, program coordinator from the Alzheimer's Association, will be the featured speaker and will discuss Alzheimer's treatment and care and ways to help loved ones in dementia. The training session will be broadcast to cooperative extension offices via videoconference to Fallon, Lovelock, Ely, Caliente, Pahrump and Winnemucca. Caregivers and interested parties in each of these cities will participate.

Respite Care is a free or low cost program offered through the Nevada Rural Counties RSVP Program which provides caregivers with essential breaks. Respite Care helps families by providing a break for two to four hours a couple of times per week and caregiver support services to Nevada's rural senior and disabled population.

Donations to the program are appreciated but no one is turned away due to an inability to pay.

RSVP is always looking for respite care volunteers. Volunteers receive a stipend of $175 per month plus mileage reimbursement. Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer or those caregivers in need of assistance are welcome to attend.

Churches host annual Christmas bazaars

Holiday shoppers will get a chance to purchase gifts and goodies at the First United Methodist Women's annual Holiday Faire from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 12.

"Celebrating Christmas Birds" is the theme this year. There will be birds of all types and colors, snowmen, snowflake ornaments, stuffed animals, pillows, kitchen linens, angels, toys and other children's items.

All kinds of baked goodies and candies also will be available, and the Attic Treasure Room will once again be open.

Shoppers can enjoy a bowl of soup and some corn bread, prepared and served by the Methodist Men from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The faire will be held in the Wesley Room of the church, located on the corner of Musser and Division streets. St. Peter's is just one block north of the corner of Telegraph and Division Streets."

St. Peter's Episcopal Church also will host its bazaar just one block north for the convenience of shoppers. They will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Readers' Theater to present performance

A free performance of Oscar Wilde's "The Importance of Being Earnest" will be given by the 15 people from the Readers' Theater of the First United Methodist Church of Carson City at 7 p.m. Oct. 28.

The church is located at Division and Musser streets. The performance will be in the main sanctuary. The discussion following the play will be led by Ursula Carlson, retired professor in English literature from Western Nevada College. It will focus on questions about the meaning of the play, the satire of society and the relevance of the themes to today's world. Refreshments will be served during this time.

The Readers' Theater performers are a small group in the church who meet twice a week to discuss plays and rehearse selected ones for public performance.

The play originally opened in London on Valentine's Day, 1895, and is a farcical comedy subtitled "A trivial comedy for serious people."

The public is invited to attend and participate in the discussion following. Students in English courses will find this of special interest.
