DUI checkpoint set for parade night

A DUI checkpoint will be held Saturday in an undisclosed location in Carson City.

Carson City Sheriff's Sgt. Darrin Sloan said the checkpoint is aimed at preventing drunken driving during the evening of the Nevada Day parade.

Thousands of revelers come to the capital city to celebrate the Silver State's admittance to the union.

Between 6 p.m. and midnight officers will be on a downtown street, said Sloan.

He said all drivers that pass through the checkpoint will be contacted.

"To keep traffic flowing smoothly, the drivers that are suspected of being under the influence will be directed to a second screening area to avoid back up during the checkpoint," said Sloan. "Having a designated driver or using a cab will ensure that everyone has a safe holiday."

Overtime for this event is paid for by the Office of Traffic Safety, Department of Public Safety.

Due to celebrations for Nevada Day, the following road closures are expected for Saturday:

• Carson Street between Winnie Lane and Stewart Street, as well as Stewart Street from its southern end to Little Lane will be closed beginning at 6:30 a.m. They will reopen at approximately 3 p.m. following the completion of the Nevada Day parade.

• Side streets along Carson Street between William Street and Winnie Lane will be closed for parade staging in the morning.

• Curry Street will be closed between Robinson and Musser Streets from 6:30 a.m. until 11 p.m.

• Telegraph Street will be closed between Carson Street and Plaza Street from 1-8 p.m.
