WINNEMUCCA - Dayton High's volleyball team went 1-2 on the second day of the Lowry Invitational.

Dayton opened with a 25-12 and 25-21 loss to Fernley, but bounced back with a 25-14 and 25-22 win over Battle Mountain. Lowry eliminated the Dust Devils 25-17 and 25-23.

"Fernley came out with a fury, and we weren't ready," Dayton coach Monica Halverson said. "We slid through the second match against Battle Mountain. They have a young and inexperienced team.

"We're playing at different levels right now. We're trying to get to that single level."

Madison Foley, a sophomore outside hitter, was named to the all-tournament squad.

"She played consistently all around," Halverson said. "She deserved to be on the team."

Dayton returns to action next weekend with matches scheduled against Elko (Friday) and Spring Creek (Saturday).

Dust Devil girls

win twice

FALLON - The Dayton girls soccer team didn't lose a match on Saturday at the Northern 3A/2A tournament.

The Dust Devils blew past Battle Mountain, 9-0, and tied Lowry, 1-1. Maribel Ledezma netted three goals in the two games, while Devon Cates and Serena Pistilli each added two. Muranda Fowler and Maddie Reid also scored for Dayton.

Meanwhile, because of a transportation mix-up, the Dust Devils boys team played just three halves instead of four.

Dayton beat Battle Mountain 4-1 in a shortened game and fell to Lowry, 2-1. Leo Rodriguez scored three times on the day, while Jose Salas and P.J. Vasquez also scored.
