RENO - The shutout streak ended, but the Carson High's girls soccer team

remained unbeaten in Northern 4A play.

Josilyn Daggs scored two first-half goals and the Senators' defense blanked

Damonte Ranch over the final 59 minutes en route to a 3-1 victory Saturday

afternoon.

Carson improved to 3-0, while Damonte Ranch dropped to 2-1. Carson, which

has allowed just one goal all season, visits arch-rival Douglas Tuesday

afternoon at 3:30.

"You go into every game trying to keep a zero on the board," said outside

midfielder Kaitlyn Holmes. "I do a little bit more this year (dropping back

to help). You do what you have to do. We have a young defense in the back).

I thought the second half we played much better."

"A shutout early in the season is great," Carson coach Randy Roser said.

ŒWe're still learning."

So far Carson's on-the-job training is going well. Damonte Ranch's goal was

a fluke, and the Senators didn't allow a shot on goal in the final 40

minutes. The Senators expect to be severely tested Tuesday by the defending

state champ Tigers.

Roser attributed Carson's slow start offensively to his player's inabiity to

adjust to what Damonte was doing defensively.

"They were playing three tight in the middle,"Roser said. "They were leaving

the outside open. The girls were getting caught up in where they were

supposed to be.

"Once we started to adjust I thought we played well."

Daggs got the Senators on the board with 27:12 left in the first half.

"I just wanted to score (right away)," Daggs said. "Randy said to go out and

score a quick one. That's what I was trying to do."

Approximately five minutes later, April Sorenson beat a Carson defender and

shot it just wide.

Sorenson would redeem herself about a minute later. Haley hallaran blasted

one that hit the crossbar and bounced right to Sorenson, who beat Emmy

Heller to tie the game at 1.

"Unlucky," Roser said.

With 14:45 remaining, Daggs broke free from a couple of Damonte defenders,

took a pass from Kenzie Tillitt and beat Damonte keeper Michelle Lucas for a

2-1 lead.

"I knew Kenzie was going to pass it," Daggs said. "I knew I just had to get

by those defenders. I knew where the open space was and I just needed to get

there."

Damonte made a good run in the 50th minute, but Heller came out hard and

slid into the Damonte attacker and deflected the ball away. Carson came back

with a nice run of its own a minute later, but failed to get off a shot.

Damonte's Hallaran shot wide in the 58th minute, and that was the Mustangs'

last serious threat of the contest.

Carson closed out the scoring in the 62nd minute when Tillitt bombed a

direct free kick from 35 yards into the upper left-hand corner of the net.

"She's trying to score on that, and that's exactly the spot she needed to

put in, " Roser said. "The goalie lines up on the right post, and she can't

get back over in time to stop that shot. She stays late after practice

working on that shot."

The news wasn't all good. Aaran Rumbaugh hurt her ankle early in the second

half, and her status for the Douglas game is questionable.

"It's a chronic thing," Roser said. "At some point, she's going to have to

have surgery."
