Carson Middle off to fast start in hoops

Carson Middle School's eighth-grade girls basketball team has started the season with a 5-0 record.

Carson beat Pau Wa Lu 39-8, Winemucca 31-28, Fallon 23-19, Silverland 39-4 and South Tahoe 29-4.

Serena Miller has led CMS with 59 points in the five wins, while Ali Kibbe has chipped in 25 points and Bailey Allen 22. Melissa Glanzman and Lindy Lehman have scored 15 points apiece.

Carson Middle School girls rack up 4-2 mark

The Carson Middle School seventh-grade girls basketball team is 4-2 after six games.

Carson Middle beat Carson Valley 19-9, Pau Wa Lu 35-8, South Tahoe 35-11 and Fernley 20-0. The losses came to Winnemucca and Fallon.

Tigersharks perform at Lahlum Memorial

Jacob Clark, Kaly Branco and Tim Grunert enjoyed successful weekends at the Molly Lahlum Memorial swim meet in Minden over the weekend.

Clark (9-10 boys) won two events and took second in five other events. He won the 200 free where he dropped 22 seconds and the 200 IM. His seconds came in the 50 back (37.53), 100 breast (1:36.02), 50 fly (36.06) and 100 free (1:13.32).

Grunert (15 and up boys) took second in the 100 breast and 200 breast, and third in the 100 free.

Branco (11-12 girls) won the 50 back and 1000 freestyle, while taking second in the 100 and 500 free events.

Dagen Kipling (13-14 boys) took third in the 200 breast, dropped a second in the 100 free and 13 seconds in the 100 back. Jay Session dropped four seconds in the 100 IM, two seconds in the 50 breast, 13 seconds in the 100 fly, eight seconds in the 200 IM, two seconds in the 50 fly.

In the 11-12 group, Morgan Nelson dropped time in eight events - five seconds in the 100 IM, 14 seconds in the 100 back, four seconds in the 50 breast, two seconds in the 50 free, 15 seconds in the 200 IM, five seconds in the 50 back, 13 seconds in the 100 free and 10 seconds in the 50 fly. Kaitlyn Nelson shaved time in six events - two seconds in the 100 IM, two seconds in the 100 back, three seconds in the 50 free, 10 seconds in the 200 IM, six seconds in the 100 free and two seconds in the 100 breast.

AltF4 leads way in Mosconi Division

AltF4 leads the Mosconi Division of the Carson City chapter of the American Poolplayers Association with eight points, just one ahead of Squeeze Play, Jerry's Kids and Cues Yer Daddy.

Jamie Day leads the high tier with 13 points, Roger Alther and Tami Beasley are tied for the middle tier lead with nine points and Bob Reed leads the low tier with seven points.

Envy-us 9 leads the Comstock Division 232-225 over Big Dogs. Juan Pina leads the high tier with 14 points, Chris Skelley leads the middle tier with 16 points and Greg Gonzalez leads the low tier with 14 points.

In the Highway 50 Division, Ponderosa leads Crazy B's and Union Bruisers 14-8. Ron Ferrando and Perry Levy are tied for the middle tier lead with 12 points, while Justin Fletcher leads the low tier with seven points.

Bennert, Kane combine for Thunder Canyon win

Mike Bennert and Tony Kane combined for an 89 to win the Ned Eyre Senior Invitational held Sept. 13-14 at Thunder Canyon Country Club.

The first day was Pinehurst/par points and the second day was four-ball stroke play and four-ball shamble.

Bennert and Kane finished with 89, two points ahead of Mike Judge and Norm Deputy, and Leland Sullivan and Marc Halverson.

Serpa, Sharpe win at Empire Ranch

Bruce Serpa won the A Flight and Nils Sharpe won the B Flight for the weekly Empire Ranch Senior Men's Club weekly tournament.

Serpa had a net 64 as did Allen Pizl, but Serpa was declared the winner. Pizl was second, John Masiello was third with a 65 followed by Ross Sidebottom and Bob Warzynski with 66s.

Sharpe finished with a net 60, a stroke better than Victor Roscha. Tony Barbaria was next with a 62 followed by Jim Watt with a 63 and Walt Blizzard with a 64.

Moormann, Luce win at Silver Oak

Craig Luce won Flight 1 and Eric Moormann won Flight 2 at last Sunday's Men's Master of the Masters event at Silver Oak.

Luce had a net 63, three shots better than John Meyer. Bill Prowse and Paul Jorgenson tied for third with 69s. Richard Burchett was fifth with a 70.

Moormann finished with a net 64, a stroke better than Jay Smith. Mike Korioth was third with a 66, Dennis Prutch was fourth with a 68 and Gary Nitzberg was fifth with a 69.

Carson Valley holds Stableford tourney

Bob McLean, Ed Umphries, John Miller and Paul Finan combined for 92 points to win Carson Valley Men's Club Stableford Tournament on Sept. 18.

Mike Davis, Roger Hala, Richard Boettiger and Steve Davis were second with an 87.

Carson Midgets roll to second win

Brady O'Keefe rushed for more than 200 yards and three scores to lad the Carson City Pop Warner Midgets to a 32-6 win over Reno last weekend.

Asa Carter and Victor Castro Jr. had other scores for Carson.

Nathan Fred-Massic, Jared Akers, Michael Gould, Austin Lowe, Jesse Knorzer, Kevin Rusler and Gregory Wallace were praised for their defensive work. Dominic Norton, Logan Menzel, Salvador Rodriguez and Carlos Pacheco played well on the offensive line. Kaleb Wold, Jonathon Artz and Simeon Lopez were among the special teams stalwarts.

Junior Midgets edge Reno Wolfpack

The Junior Midget Senators won their first contest of the year, beating the Reno Wolfpack 12-0 at Governors Field.

Carson scored on its first possession after Dennis Krueger went off tackle for a 56-yard touchdown run. John Cavilia went around the right end later to put the Senators up 12-0. The Carson defense was stingy all day and was led by Jordan Warren, Jarod Butler, Tez Allen, Derek Schafer, Nick Borst, Conner Larkin and Kyle Gagnon.

Fundraiser set at Sierra Lutheran

The fifth annual Falcons Festival in the Fall will be Thursday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Minden Food Company, 1599 Esmeralda Ave. Cost is $25 per ticket.

The event will include a wine tasting with new release wines, food, local artists' artwork on display courtesy of Lone Tree Frame Gallery, live music and a book signing by Harvard author Gordon Zuckerman for his new novel, "Crude Deception," which is part of the "Sentinel" series. Proceeds will benefit the basketball program at Sierra Lutheran High School. Tickets can be purchased at the Minden Food Company (783-1988) or Sierra Lutheran (267-1921).
