Thanks for making poker tourney a success

The Carson City Sunset Rotary Club would like to thank the community for supporting its first Texas Hold 'em Poker Tournament held Jan. 21 at Eagle Valley Golf Club.

The beneficiaries of this fundraiser are our local junior high students who will successfully interview for positions to a week-long leadership camp called Rotary Youth Leadership Awards.

We raised more than $2,300 at this event and could not have put it on without the assistance of Star Anderson, general manager of the Carson Nugget, and her poker room manager, Karen Newton.

Other notables in our success were Eagle Valley Golf Club, Bob Langson, poker dealers from the Carson Nugget and of course, our great community.

With youth as our focus this year, we have found the community to be very responsive to our request for support, auction and raffle items and thank Costco, Best Buy, Alie's Flowers, Little People Portraits and Adele's.

Look for our next fundraiser coming April 14 at Fuji Park, the Hometown Hoedown.

Quick response by first responders greatly appreciated

To the Carson City Fire and Sheriff departments:

On Feb. 1, about 11:15 p.m., the fire alarms went off in my apartment complex. This three-story complex is full of disabled residents who need considerable assistance.

The firemen and police responded within a of couple minutes and were quickly fighting the fire, knocking on our doors to notify us what was going on, telling us that the fire was extinguished, and that we were safe.

You responded with sufficient firemen, police, trucks, and ambulances to take care of us efficiently and give us the care we could have needed had the fire been worse.

I would like to publicly thank each and every one of you for your quick response and fast work getting the fire out and calming our fear. It's nice to know you're nearby and that you'll be there.

Feast of Chocolate was a sweet success

Cheers & Kudos to the many people of Carson City who supported the American Association of University Women's 13th annual Feast of Chocolate. These generous businesses donated the treats: Carson City Confections, Grandma Hattie's, Trader Joe's and YoGo Frozen Yogurt. The Culinary Arts students of Carson High School made and served an amazing variety of delicious chocolate candies and baked goods. The Grocery Outlet donated wine for pairing with chocolate. Carson Valley Inn, Artisan Cafe, Jan Lindsey Massage, Silpada Jewelry, Mary Kay Cosmetics, and Celebrating Grace Designs contributed wonderful raffle prizes.

Thanks to Wanda Perschnick for the beautiful harp music performed throughout the event. A big "thank you" also goes to the great people at the Plaza Hotel and Convention Center and to all the people who came to feast on chocolate. Proceeds fund local scholarships and the AAUW Educational Opportunities Fund.

The band will play on. The Capital City Community Band would like to thank the citizens of Carson City and surrounding areas for the kind generosity and help at our fundraising concert on Jan. 29. A special thanks to the First Presbyterian Church.

Because of the community support, we hope to continue our 34-year tradition of providing free concerts to the citizens of our area.

I just want to say thank you for a wonderful season Carson High girls' varsity basketball team, and to coach Ackerman and his assistant Nate Tolbert.
